Sylvester Stallone’s Tulsa King Is Switching Main Characters After Season 4

After its upcoming fourth season, Tulsa King will be entering a whole new phase, with the Taylor Sheridan series virtually changing main characters. Despite Tulsa King season 4 not premiering until October 16, Paramount+ has already given the green light to another season of the Sylvester Stallone series, renewing the show for a fifth season early. With Stallone set to return as Dwight “The General” Manfredi, Tulsa King season 5 may look fairly different than viewers expect depending on what happens in the upcoming season, and how the series proceeds after the start of its first spinoff, the upcoming Frisco King.

With other changes coming to the series, namely a switch in the setting that seems to be taking the aforementioned king out of Oklahoma entirely, the show could be something entirely different in Tulsa King season 5. The move is an interesting one for Sheridan’s Paramount+ series, both because of the timing and because of the fact that viewers aren’t yet privy to what’s to come in the next season of the series. Even so, knowing that Frisco King is going to take the franchise’s formula and build a new series with Samuel L. Jackson’s Russell Lee Washington Jr. at the center is an exciting step forward.

With the franchise moving in two new directions as season 4 comes into view, the fact that both Dwight’s story is bringing him to his original world in New York while Frisco King gets started means that everything’s realigning with Tulsa King.

Excitingly, Tulsa King is bringing a whole new character into the fold as the series prepares to expand into a franchise with the advent of its first spinoff. Frisco King represents the first time that the newer Sheridan franchise will be moving away from Manfredi, focusing on Jackson’s character, Lee. With an eight-episode first season that was filmed earlier in 2026, the series has already gone through a significant evolution since the beginning of its life, when it was originally established as NOLA King. Though it was originally meant to be set in New Orleans, the series moved to a Texas locale, filming in Fort Worth.

While there’s likely still more story to come with Tulsa King season 4 still ahead, the connection between Frisco King and its predecessor feels like a more substantial one than simply sharing a universe. The pair’s established history leaves a long-drawn-out relationship that spans long before their time in prison together, with Dwight having saved Lee’s life decades before. Giving Frisco King more of a foundation with Lee seeing Dwight as a more honorable person than most, the new Sheridan series will be able to mix in an interesting tether between the characters as the new series comes to life.

With shows like Yellowstone having proven able to build expanded universes with Sheridan at the helm, Tulsa King’s expansion already seems like it’s going to be a tremendous success. With Tulsa King already a huge hit for Paramount+, the upcoming season has received glowing early reviews that make it clear the show is going to continue to work for audiences, building a compelling story that will ultimately move Manfredi away from the life he’s been building in Oklahoma. Though launching a disconnected series isn’t always easy, knowing that Lee has already appeared in Tulsa King season 3 and will be established further as the series continues makes his spinoff seem like a safe bet.

Sheridan’s track record with Paramount+ viewers, and in a broad sense, viewers in general, has been solid, which also leaves little doubt that he’ll be able to bring Frisco King to life without issue. While taking a stab at turning a successful protagonist’s supporting character into the lead of their own series doesn’t always feel like it’s a safe bet, Sheridan doing so with two powerhouse characters played by tremendous actors isn’t untenable. Instead, with Sheridan writing all eight episodes of Frisco King and moving Tulsa King in a new direction, the new extension of the original series will likely bolster another major franchise.
