Law & Order: SVU season 28 has officially been fixed. When Dick Wolf‘s most popular series debuted in 1999, it relied on the success of the flagship series. Like Law & Order, it focused on a group of people fighting for justice in New York, but their specialty was tackling heinous and sensitive crimes. Over time, countless cast reshuffles, Law & Order: SVU has impressively been able to stand the test of time, with Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson at the forefront of its storytelling.
Now, Law & Order: SVU is the longest-running scripted show on the small screen — even overtaking Law & Order. The 2025-2026 TV season was a mix of old and new for the Manhattan office, opening the year with Captain Cragen’s unexpected death and ending it with Benson winning her political feud with Chief Tynan. The squad in itself saw a few changes, including the return of Amanda Rollins and the departure of Joe Velasco. However, arguably the most confusing character development in Law & Order: SVU season 27 was Fin’s.
Ice-T’s Fin Will Be In All Episodes Of Law & Order: SVU Season 28
Right after Cragen’s death, Fin was assaulted, setting up his arc for the rest of Law & Order: SVU season 27. Apparently, he was shaken by the incident that he had to take extended periods of leave to get better. Behind-the-scenes, the narrative was due to cost-cutting measures for the series — something that has been happening across network TV for a few years now. More recently, Ice-T shared that Law & Order: SVU season 27 had to decrease his screentime to make room for the budget as Kelli Giddish returned. Despite the justification, his expanded absence from the show was odd, considering how long he has been part of the project.
The great news is, Ice-T also confirmed that Fin will be in all episodes of Law & Order: SVU season 28, effectively making up for his decreased involvement in season 27. What his arc this upcoming year will entail is still unclear at this point, but that doesn’t matter much, considering how much he was missed last cycle. The fact that he will be back full-time with the Manhattan SVU means that NBC and Wolf Entertainment can craft a compelling plot for him.
Why Benson & Fin’s Relationship Is The Bedrock Of Law & Order: SVU
Admittedly, there has been an increased interest in the dynamic of Benson and Elliot Stabler, especially after Chris Meloni returned to the Law & Order franchise. The pair had been partners for years, until he left unceremoniously. This created a rift, but their reunion and the death of Kathy Stabler paved the way for the series to finally do something about the fan-clamor regarding a potential romantic relationship. Despite their history, there’s an argument that Benson’s best dynamic in Law & Order: SVU is with Fin.
Unlike Stabler, Ice-T’s character stuck by Benson throughout all these years. In her darkest time, he was there — both as a co-worker and a friend. Separating them in Law & Order: SVU season 27 was disappointing, especially as she fought one of the trickiest political conflicts she’s had as the captain. Fin was absent for most of it, including the conflict brought about by the arrival of Jake Griffin. As Law & Order: SVU season 28 promises to reinstate the veteran character’s place in the cast, Benson can finally have her most trusted ally back.
