SVU Season 27’s Finale Proved Benson Really Doesn’t Need Stabler Anymore

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Law & Order: SVU season 27, episode 21, “Monster.”Law & Order: Special Victims Unit ended season 27 with one of the worst bad guys of the year, but the way Benson handled it was inspiring. The odds were stacked against Benson’s unit when their evidence to put a kidnapper behind bars was thrown out, but there was a silver lining. The season 27 finale proved an important point about Benson and her relationship with Stabler.

While more than a decade has passed since Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson and Christopher Meloni’s Elliot Stabler were paired up on SVU, their partnership remains one of the most iconic in television history. Some fans have been rooting for a romance since 1999, after all, and they were a strong duo back in the day.

They were also very codependent by the end of their original time together, with Benson leaning so heavily on him that she was unmoored for quite some time after Stabler left following season 12. Both SVU and Law & Order: Organized Crime teased a possible romance between the pair, with mixed results.

Stabler only appeared once in season 27, in a brief moment with Benson after Captain Cragen’s death. Now, in the wake of Law & Order: Organized Crime’s cancellation, there have been calls for Stabler to return to Special Victims full-time. However, based on the events of the season 27 finale, Benson and the unit are doing just fine without him.

Benson’s codependence (not to mention Stabler’s violence) just doesn’t hold the same appeal in 2026 that it did in the Benson/Stabler era between 1999 and 2011. With Law & Order: SVU season 28 approaching, it’s worth considering how the season 27 finale sets up what’s next for Hargitay’s character.

Law & Order: SVU Season 27 Shows That Benson’s Team Has Her Back

For as many years as Benson felt lonely and abandoned after Stabler left, she definitely earned a crew that has her back. By the end of season 27, she knew with certainty that she could count on her whole team, including Det. Griffin. Despite a sketchy beginning, he came through for her when she needed him.

It was no surprise that she had Rollins’ support after bringing her back, and Fin was her right-hand man whenever Ice-T was actually included in episodes. Curry turned out to be ride-or-die as well, despite holding the same rank as Benson. Without Griffin betraying Tynan, she might have ended season 27 on the verge of losing her job.

Benson got the last word with Tynan, but it was fitting that her final scene was with the rest of the team at Griffin’s hospital bed. While Mariska Hargitay is undeniably the star of the show as Benson, the rest of the season 27 team really feels like a cohesive ensemble rather than two partners against the world. That’s what she deserves.

Could The Stabler Era Be Over For SVU?

Benson and Stabler worked as a unit for over a decade, and he immediately saddled her with new baggage when he returned for Organized Crime. They finally got more relaxed with each other just last year on OC and SVU. As of the end of season 27, it’s fair to say Benson has officially moved on from her Stabler era.

That is, she’s moved on from the era of Stabler working at the NYPD. If he’d been present as her partner in the season 27 finale, it’s hard to imagine he wouldn’t have been in overprotective mode due to her suspension. He might have lost his temper and then created a whole new problem for her.

Benson bringing down Tynan and celebrating with her whole team just felt right, and it wouldn’t have been possible if Stabler were around full-time again. Showrunner Michele Fazekas spoke with TVLine about scrapping an early plan for him to appear in the finale:

“I thought about bringing him into the season finale. But I don’t regret it, because the scene [in Episode 20] with Velasco and Benson was probably the scene that I would have done with Stabler and Benson [in the finale]. And I actually really liked that it was Velasco.”

None of this is to say that Christopher Meloni should never return or that Stabler makes SVU worse in its current era. Benson is just better off without him being by her side at all times, which was clearer than ever in the season 27 finale when she was instead surrounded by her supportive colleagues: Fin, Rollins, Curry, and Griff.

In season 16, Benson even told Amaro, her first partner after Stabler, that she “grew more in my last four years with you than I did in the 12 years that I was with him” because their relationship “didn’t allow for anything else.” Meloni occasionally returning as a guest star would be great, as long as Benson keeps growing. Some of the best seasons of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit were the early years when the team was made up of Benson, Stabler, Munch, Fin, and Cragen, but now, Benson has the courage and the perfect team to work without him.
