WARNING: Contains Potential Spoilers for Superman #29 (2025)!
A Silver Age Superman villain has officially returned to the DC Universe, and his reentrance into the publisher’s narratives is nothing short of carnage as he brutally announces his comeback by killing an iconic hero. The fallen hero’s final words are nothing less than heartbreaking, marking a devastating moment that underscores the villain’s ruthless return.
Superman #29 by Joshua Williamson and Dan Mora picks up where the last issue left off, with Superman teaming up with Superboy-Prime to save the future by rescuing Booster Gold in the 31st century.
As most DC fans know, this era is home to the Legion of Super-Heroes, a near-utopia of heroics. However, upon arrival, Superman and Prime find the century ravaged, the Legion nearly destroyed, and a shocking betrayer among them: Chameleon.
Chameleon Returns to the DC Universe, Killing Brainiac

Upon joining a ragtag group of the few surviving Legion of Super-Heroes, Superman and Prime lead a mission to rescue Booster Gold and hopefully save the DC Universe. As they near Darkseid’s headquarters, Prime experiences a moment of clarity and calls out the suspicious behavior of Cosmic Boy, whose actions don’t align with his supposed magnetic powers.
Superboy-Prime questions why Cosmic Boy, with magnetic abilities, was using his hands on a metal shovel to dig graves. Exposed in his deception, the imposter shapeshifts into Chameleon Chief, viciously spearing his arm through Brainiac-5’s chest. This shocking moment serves as an unforgettable debut for a relatively obscure DC villain, instantly establishing him as a deadly threat.
For those unfamiliar, Chameleon Chief is a longtime member of the Legion of Super-Villains and a recurring enemy of the Legion of Super-Heroes. First debuting in Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen #63 (1962), he hails from the alien race known as the Durlans, who can shape-shift at will for any length of time with virtually no limitations on size or form.
Brainiac’s Last Words to Superman Are TRAGIC
Main Cover by Dan Mora for Superman #29 (2025)
While the reveal that Cosmic Boy was actually Chameleon was a major twist, fans received an emotional gut-punch as Superman cradled a dying Brainiac-5 while Superboy-Prime confronted the villain. In his final moments, Brainiac-5 tells Superman, “It’s okay… at least my last act with the Legion…is with you… Long live… Superman…” A heartbreaking farewell that underscores the tragedy of the battle.
This tragic and unexpected death heightens the hopelessness, especially since most of the Legion of Super-Heroes had already been vanquished before Superman’s arrival in the 31st century. Yet, a spark of hope remains. With Booster Gold back in play, Superman may be able to use his time-traveling powers to prevent these losses and ultimately save the future of the DCU.
