In a significant mid-season development, Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) have announced a replacement for David Payne for the remainder of the Indian Premier League 2026. Payne, who had himself joined as a backup for Jack Edwards, has been ruled out due to an ankle injury, prompting the franchise to make yet another squad adjustment during a crucial phase of the tournament.
David Payne’s short journey with SRH
Payne’s stint with SRH turned out to be a short-lived one. The left-arm pacer managed to feature in just two matches, picking up a couple of wickets before his campaign was halted. Reports from the team management confirmed that Payne had been battling a persistent ankle issue, which worsened during the tournament. Following medical assessment, the franchise’s support staff concluded that the injury required a longer rehabilitation period, making him unavailable for the rest of the season.
This comes as a setback for SRH, who have already dealt with multiple injury concerns this season. Payne was expected to provide variety to the bowling attack with his angle and control, especially during the powerplay. However, his untimely exit has forced the think tank to look for a more robust and impactful option moving forward.
SRH name repalcement of Payne
To address the void left by Payne, SRH have secured the services of Gerald Coetzee for a reported fee of INR 2 crore. The South African speedster is known for his aggressive approach and ability to consistently hit high speeds, making him a valuable addition to the squad.
Coetzee brings with him prior IPL experience, having represented franchises like Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans. His ability to extract bounce and deliver under pressure situations—particularly in the middle overs and at the death—adds a new dimension to SRH’s bowling unit.
Team management believes Coetzee’s inclusion will provide the side with a genuine wicket-taking threat, something they have occasionally lacked in crunch moments this season. His raw pace and attacking mindset are expected to complement the existing bowling lineup and give the captain more flexibility in execution.

Pat Cummins returns to lead SRH resurgence
In further positive news for the franchise, Pat Cummins is set to return to action after recovering from injury. The SRH skipper’s comeback is seen as a major boost, both in terms of leadership and on-field performance.
Cummins’ absence had left a noticeable gap in SRH’s tactical approach, especially in tight situations. His return not only strengthens the bowling unit but also restores stability in decision-making during key phases of the game. Known for his calm demeanor and sharp cricketing acumen, Cummins’ presence could prove pivotal as SRH aim to regain momentum.
