
India’s recent overseas campaigns have triggered serious concern among cricket fans and analysts alike. Following a shocking 2-0 defeat against Ireland and a humbling 4-0 loss in England, the national team’s batting lineup has faced sharp criticism for failing on foreign soil. While many experts point to the transition from the fast-paced Indian Premier League (IPL) to challenging alien conditions, legendary Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar has offered a fresh, tactical perspective on the underlying issue. According to the icon, the problem is less about pitch quality and far more about the physical dimensions of Indian grounds.
Sunil Gavaskar reveals the reason behind Indian batters’ overseas struggles
While popular opinion blames flat Indian pitches for spoiling batters, Gavaskar believes the real culprit is ground size. In domestic matches and the IPL, boundary ropes are frequently drawn in, creating artificially small dimensions where mishits routinely clear the hoardings for six.
When these same players travel overseas to venues in England or Australia, where grounds feature deep outfield dimensions, those identical mis-timed strokes fall comfortably into the hands of fielders along the boundary rope. Batters accustomed to getting high rewards for mistimed shots suddenly find themselves caught in the deep.
“People have been speaking about the Indian batters hammering the bowling on flat pitches and smaller boundaries in the IPL and then getting exposed in unfamiliar conditions in England. The fact is that there were flat pitches in India, alright, but it’s the ridiculously small boundaries that flatter the batter, whose mishits can clear the ropes, while in countries with bigger and longer boundaries these same hits are caught inside the boundary line,” Gavaskar wrote in Sportstar.
Additionally, these shortened boundaries negatively impact India’s spin bowling attack. Fearing the short ropes, Indian spinners often bowl faster, flatter trajectories to avoid getting hit over the fence. This reliance on medium-pace “darters” deprives the ball of natural flight, loop, and dip. Overseas spinners like Adil Rashid and Will Jacks succeed precisely because they bowl slower, enticing batters into mistakes, a freedom Indian slow bowlers rarely enjoy under domestic setup constraints.
“This will also give our spin bowlers the opportunity to bowl a bit slower so that they can get the loop and turn that a slower delivery produces. The medium-pace darters they currently bowl actually help the batter use the pace, get under the ball and power it into the stands. Adil Rashid and Will Jacks bowled almost 8 to 10 km/h slower than the Indian spinners and so were far more effective than them,” he added.

Gavaskar calls on the BCCI to act on the solution
To bridge this crucial gap, Gavaskar has urged the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to implement immediate structural changes ahead of the upcoming domestic season. His recommended fix is practical and straightforward: push the boundary ropes back as far as possible at every venue across India.
At almost all Indian stadiums, significant unused turf exists behind the LED advertisement boards. By utilizing this extra space and extending the boundary line by even a few yards, the BCCI can force batters to rely on power, placement, and timing rather than relying on undersized outfields.
Making this systemic adjustment before the upcoming World Cup would offer two massive benefits:
- Real-world preparation for batters: Indian players would recalibrate their power-hitting, learning to respect long boundaries before stepping onto foreign grounds.
- Revival of traditional spin: Slow bowlers would gain the confidence to toss the ball up, giving it loop and turn without constant fear of easy mishit sixes.
By adopting Gavaskar’s straightforward proposal, the BCCI can ensure Indian cricket develops a more adaptable, resilient squad capable of dominating in every corner of the world.
