We’ve said it time and time again, but sometimes, browsing Steam is one of the best things you can do if you’re looking for a new gaming experience. There are tons of modifiers and sales pages to sift through at this point, since the platform has become even bigger than it was in the past, but it’s really easy to find free games at a moment’s notice.
While it’s a shame that publishers like Sony are getting out of the PC game, there’s still plenty of variety on offer. For instance, it’s easy to miss that there’s a big AAA release from this year on Steam right now.
If you need something new to play, you can grab a hit game from 2026 on Steam. Just know that you have a limited amount of time to take advantage of this offer.
Right now, as announced in the recent PlayStation State of Play stream, Marathon is completely free on Steam until June 9 at 10AM ET. With “very positive” reviews under its belt, this is Bungie’s follow-up to the Destiny series, and the latest extraction shooter to hit the market.
Tasked with exploring the world of Tau Ceti IV, you play as a Runner who attempts to scavenge scraps and weaponry to take down PVE and PVP enemies alike. There are several Runner archetypes and many builds to choose from, but the main loop centers on three players, extraction-based gameplay, and a focus on loot and experience.
There is also a narrative going on in the background, propped up by seasonal gameplay shifts and events: “Liaise with six competing factions, each offering lucrative incentives to advance their foothold on Tau Ceti. Completing faction contracts grows your baseline power via season-long unlocks like Runner shell upgrades, stronger starting loadouts, expanded vault space, and specialized wares on offer for spare loot.”
Remember, you have until June 9 at 10AM ET to play Marathon completely for free, so take advantage of it, and think of it like an extended demo/free game trial. It’s very easy to tell if you’re going to be into it within the first 20 minutes, and if you are, there’s a 30% sale going on, provided that you want to buy in.
Bungie is in a very precarious spot right now with Destiny 2 in the rear-view mirror. If leaks are accurate, the studio isn’t prepping for a Destiny 3 at this point, leaving their fate completely tied to Marathon for the time being.
It’s been suggested that Bungie pivot the game by adding more content to bring back all the lost Destiny players, but we’re currently not certain how Marathon will be handled going forward. In the near future, though, you can play it on Steam with no strings attached.
