Steam has become the best place to go for PC gamers over the years, regardless of what genre you may or may not be into. Whether you’re after the latest shooter, or a beloved indie release, you can usually find it on Valve’s platform, and millions of players flock back every week to see what’s on offer.
Even better than that, a lot of the games available on Steam can be played entirely for free. The backbone of that principle is free-to-play titles like Warframe and Counter-Strike, but there are others outside of that which you can play for nothing if you’re quick enough.
Heading into each weekend, several games are usually made free for the duration, allowing you to get a full few days of enjoyment, without spending any of your hard-earned money. Though they go back to full price after, it does at least provide a chance to see if they’re any good before you commit to a purchase. The latest run of those has been live for a couple of days, but there’s still 24 hours left to enjoy them.
This weekend, four games have been made free-to-play until May 18 at 6.00pm for your local time, and there are some genuinely brilliant options this time around, if you’re looking for something to do with your last day off.
First up is Make Way, a classic top-down multiplayer racing game that takes its cues from old school hits like Micro Machines. The really cool selling point is that the players who are taking part in the lobby are the ones who build the tracks before each round. Add to that formula a wide array of weaponry and hazards, and you’re quickly onto one of the most chaotic racers around.
V Rising is an action RPG with survival elements that puts the focus on that old video game classic, the vampire. You wake up as one of the aforementioned blood suckers and from there it’s all about surviving and thriving. You can build a thematically appropriate castle, raid nearby villages and turn yourself into the most feared being around. It’s pretty cool.
MISERY is a 1–5 player co-op survival game set in that most reliable of video game worlds, a post-nuclear disaster zone. It’s a really solid example of the genre, with all the usual bells and whistles, from base building to scavenging for resources and weapon crafting. The procedurally generated world is also great for replayability, so there’s great bang for your buck.
The three previous entries all sit on Very Positive reviews on Steam (which is difficult enough), but the final option for today has accrued Overwhelmingly Positive feedback from more than 1700 reviews. Astral Ascent is a 2D platformer roguelite where you can choose from one of four heroes to escape The Garden, an astral prison guarded by 12 highly varied bosses.
It’s a very nice game to look at, and by all accounts it’s even better to play, with fast-paced combat very much at the forefront.
As mentioned earlier, it’s always worth checking in on Steam on a Friday to see what exactly has gone free-to-play for the weekend. It gives a much better window into the game than a demo, and you can even get some done from start to finish if you’re speedy with your gameplay.
