The new villain in the Star Trek franchise is an evil mastermind capable of manipulating the whole Deep Space Nine crew without being spotted. Most of the time, the most dangerous Star Trek antagonists are the ones who represent a threat beyond traditional warfare or physical combat. A prime example is Armus, the literal skin-like puddle of concentrated negative emotion on a desolate planet that executes Lieutenant Tasha Yar for its own amusement. Likewise, the Enterprise crew meets the giant Planet Killer cone that devours celestial bodies like a mechanical shark, and a parasitic consciousness that hijacks Starfleet command through brain bugs.

Entities like Q have antagonistic roles that go beyond a typical desire for conquest or destruction. Wielding absolute omnipotence, Q treats the Enterprise as an intellectual sandbox for his own amusement. His cruelty is rarely malicious, and instead manifests as a series of twisted ethical tests and psychological mazes designed to humble human arrogance. Q’s erratic behavior forces the crew to stop relying on traditional weapons and defense systems in order to find more effective ways to quell Q’s existencial impulses.

Q isn’t the only antagonist of this kind, as Deep Space Nine’s new villain draws inspiration from a famous terrestrial board game to manifest its own existential trickery.

After a sudden communications blackout during a diplomatic summit leaves Deep Space Nine’s skeleton crew isolated and drowning in paranoia, Star Trek: Holo-Ween II teases the sinister entity who seems to have murdered the Varela’s captain and framed Jadzia Dax for it. Issue #2 brings every major player to the station’s malfunctioning holosuites, where the mysterious villain designs a game based on the classic board game Clue. While Star Trek: Holo-Ween II #2 doesn’t reveal the villain’s face or name yet, it does unveil its body: an incredibly tall woman with long limbs, wearing a dark Victorian dress.

This evil mastermind chooses Chief Miles O’Brien to fill the tragic role of Mr. Boddy, the victim whose sudden disappearance kicks off the panic in Clue. To solve the mystery under a ticking clock, Lt. Commander Worf is cast as the military-minded Colonel Mustard, while Jadzia Dax becomes Miss Scarlet, Commander Fox becomes Mrs. Peacock, and Pattee becomes Mr. Green. As suspicion grows, the chosen players must play along with this living puzzle to solve the mystery and expose the shadow villain before the game ends in real casualties.

Star Trek: Holo-Ween #2 is now available from IDW Entertainment
