Square Enix Now Has The Perfect Opportunity To Announce Final Fantasy 9 Remake

Rumors of a Final Fantasy 9 remake have been going around for years now, but next week gives Square Enix the perfect opportunity to confirm them. Rumblings of an FF9 remake began in earnest in 2021, when it featured on a leaked list of games due for NVIDIA’s GeForce Now service. But really, the desire for such a remake began a year prior, when Final Fantasy 7 Remake hit the shelves, and fans everywhere began wondering which other classic games Square might want to remake next.

Still, despite almost half a decade of speculation, and almost every other game from the NVIDIA leak being proven to exist, absolutely nothing concrete has come out about an FF9 remake – at least not yet. It’s one of the most beloved games in the series, and although it hasn’t quite reached the iconic status of FF7, FF9 has its vocal and devoted fan base. That said, Square Enix is really setting up the perfect opportunity to confirm the long-standing remake rumors as soon as next week – all that remains is to see whether they’ll take it.

July 7 Is The 25th Anniversary of FF9

Square’s Social Media Commemorates The Date

Square recently posted a calendar for the month of July 2025 on its social media channels (here via taiyo85) on Reddit. The backdrop features FF9-inspired art, depicting the entire playable cast on stage of the Prima Vista, amid a hail of confetti, a cheering crowd, and a photobombing Moogle. You may note that July 7 is marked with a little Moogle icon, too, and there’s a reason for that: July 7 is the 25th anniversary of the original release of Final Fantasy 9, which came out on that day in Japan way back in 2000.

It Certainly Sounds Like FF9 Remake Is Getting Announced Soon

With Final Fantasy 9 finally celebrating its 25th anniversary, it certainly seems like Square Enix is gearing up to create a remake.

And the intentions of this image could be totally innocent: it’s obviously supposed to be used as a convenient phone background, so you can enjoy some art of FF9‘s memorable cast of characters while seeing your month at a glance. That said, it’s really pushing the 25th anniversary of FF9, which would kind of be the perfect day to announce an FF9 remake.

Square Enix is literally marking our calendars for July 7.

The anniversary will put FF9 at the forefront of many players’ minds, which would help bring more attention to such a major announcement. And it’s long-since been tradition for developers to reveal re-releases or sequels on a game’s anniversary, so this wouldn’t be out of character. Square Enix is literally marking our calendars for July 7, but whether it’s just a bit of fun or a hint at an upcoming announcement remains to be seen.

An FF9 Remake Seems Likely – But We Don’t Know When

FF9 Is All But Announced

Ultimately, all the evidence points to an FF9 remake being real. Between the recently revealed merch, the NVIDIA leaks, the plethora of other remakes coming out of Square, and now, the impending 25th anniversary, it all adds up. Even before the 25th anniversary, Square’s teasing posts on social media have bolstered fan expectations of an FF9 remake.

With Final Fantasy 9 remake rumors brewing, I have one hope for the release to give it something that no other Final Fantasy has had.

But through it all, Square Enix has remained quiet on the possibility of an FF9 remake, refusing to confirm or deny whether it really exists. If it does, we may find out more about a potential Final Fantasy 9 remake in just a few days – but there’s just as good a chance that we may not.
