Tory Burch included shark-tooth earrings.
A recognizably shaped earring can give an otherwise clean look a point of interest without adding another layer of clothing. Its relationship to the neckline matters: an open collar leaves different space around it than a high neck.
Try a sculptural or motif earring with a simple shirt and keep the necklace minimal at first. Look at the whole upper part of the outfit, including collar, glasses and hair, rather than judging the earring on its own.
Weight is part of the decision. An accessory you remove after an hour will not be useful simply because the shape is compelling. Choose a scale you enjoy wearing for the actual length of your day.
You can use this idea with earrings you already own. Changing the neckline or pulling back one side of your hair may reveal a detail that usually gets lost.
If an outfit lacks definition, try the waist detail. If it needs color, a scarf may be enough. If the clothes are very plain, a decorative bag or distinctive earring can supply the interest. Decide what is missing before adding something. That keeps the result personal and gives each piece a reason to be there.
