Solo Leveling Is Now The Biggest Challenger To Demon Slayer’s Throne

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Part I surpassed any and all expectations with its record-breaking box office performance. Drawing in millions of fans around the world, the franchise broke record after record, cementing its place in anime history and proving to the entertainment industry that anime has grown far beyond a niche interest. That said, as anime grows in popularity, there are some titles that may be capable of posing a serious challenge.

Recently, it was announced that Solo Leveling, Crunchyroll’s breakout hit title, will officially be receiving an anime movie in 2027. As one of the fastest-rising modern franchises with a massive global fan base of its own, Solo Leveling is perfectly positioned to have one of the biggest theatrical releases in anime history, making it a potential contender to match Demon Slayer’s extraordinary box office success.

Solo Leveling’s 2027 Film Can Challenge Demon Slayer’s Massive Success

Demon Slayer’s Infinity Castle Part I set exceptionally high standards for every anime film that follows. The film stands as one of the highest-grossing releases of 2025, standing alongside major titles like James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash and the live-action How to Train Your Dragon. It even won Crunchyroll’s Film of the Year Award in late May 2026, further proving its global dominance and appeal.

It became Japan’s most successful film of all time, making it a difficult film to contend with. However, with Solo Leveling’s announcement of a feature film in production, it’s entirely possible that Demon Slayer will be facing a formidable competitor. The announcement was made during Anime Expo 2026 and quickly gained worldwide attention from fans eagerly awaiting the franchise’s next chapter.

Infinity Castle proved that anime films can compete with Hollywood blockbusters and gained massive global attention, opening the door for other anime to break into the mainstream and earn higher numbers than ever before. While surpassing Infinity Castle will remain an enormous challenge considering its unprecedented achievements, if any modern title can challenge its dominance, it would be Solo Leveling.

Solo Leveling’s Rapid Growth Makes It a Serious Threat to Demon Slayer

As one of the industry’s fastest-growing titles, Solo Leveling has the opportunity to match Demon Slayer’s success. Given how quickly it exploded in popularity on Crunchyroll, breaking multiple records including becoming the most-watched and most-rated title on the streaming platform’s library, Solo Leveling has the momentum and demand necessary to become one of the biggest anime films in recent history.

Paired with the series’ accessibility in comparison to Demon Slayer, Solo Leveling could encourage more viewers to see it in theaters. With only two short seasons to catch up on, casual fans or audience members who may be interested in experiencing what anime films can offer only need to catch up on 24 episodes rather than Demon Slayer’s 63 episodes, some of which extend to the hour mark.

01

Solo Leveling’s protagonist is a Korean E-Rank hunter widely mocked at the start of the series as “the world’s weakest” — before a near-death experience in a double dungeon transforms him into the Player. Name him (Korean original).

02

Solo Leveling didn’t start as Japanese manga or anime. It originated in 2016 as a Korean web novel on KakaoPage, was adapted into a colourful vertical-scrolling webtoon (drawn by Jang Sung-rak / Dubu) and only later became an A-1 Pictures anime in 2024. What term describes its native Korean comic format?

03

The original Solo Leveling web novel ran from 2016 to 2018 on KakaoPage and was written under a single mononymous pen name. The author is famously private, with very little known about him — but he’s widely credited with single-handedly resetting global expectations for what Korean web fiction could be. Name him.

04

In Solo Leveling’s world, mysterious gates have appeared on Earth and only awakened “hunters” can enter the dungeons inside them. Hunters are evaluated by the Korean Hunter Association on a letter-grade scale from the lowest to the strongest. What rank does Sung Jinwoo start with, before becoming the Player?

05

After the Cartenon Temple double-dungeon massacre, Jinwoo wakes up in a hospital and begins seeing a personal RPG-style HUD that nobody else can see — daily quests, stat windows, level-ups, Notices written in glowing blue text. The franchise calls Jinwoo’s unique designation what?

06

The Solo Leveling anime adaptation premiered in January 2024 to record streaming numbers on Crunchyroll — the most-watched debut in the platform’s history. The animation studio is the same Aniplex-affiliated house behind Sword Art Online, 86 and Lycoris Recoil. Name it.

07

As Jinwoo levels up he unlocks the Shadow Extraction skill, which lets him raise the corpses of defeated foes as loyal shadow soldiers. The first major shadow soldier he raises — a red-armored knight extracted from the Job Change dungeon Knight Captain — becomes one of his signature fighters. Name him.

08

Late in the series, the System reveals that Jinwoo isn’t merely the Player — he’s the chosen successor of the dying ninth Monarch of the Shadows, who sided with the Rulers against the other eight Monarchs. Jinwoo inherits his title and his power. Name this previous Shadow Monarch whose mantle Jinwoo takes up.

Shadow Monarch — or still E-Rank?

Given that Solo Leveling’s franchise already had a massive global fan base from its original web novel and manhwa, the major breakout of its anime is far from surprising, especially as audiences around the world are becoming more open and receptive to the medium. Now that Demon Slayer has proven that anime films can achieve mainstream success, Solo Leveling has a unique opportunity to reach similar heights.

For those reasons, it’s entirely plausible for Solo Leveling to enter theaters as a true competitor for Demon Slayer. If its record-breaking success is anything to go by, Solo Leveling’s 2027 film will dominate box offices, making it one of the biggest theatrical anime events in recent history. While none of this guarantees that it would surpass Infinity Castle, it does stand out as a promising challenger in the industry.
