Silksong Achieves Perfect 100 Score on Metacritic

It’s early, but reviews are slowly trickling in for Hollow Knight: Silksong, and its debut on Metacritic has put it in a league of its own with an unprecedented score. There were no early reviews for Silksong, as the game’s release date was revealed just two weeks before its release on September 4, and it’s turning out to be a smash hit among critics and fans, despite some review bombing over its Chinese localization.

As it stands on Metacritic, Silksong is currently the highest-rated game of all time, with a perfect score of 100, as of this writing. The next highest-rated game ever on Metacritic is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, with a score of 99.

It May Not Last, But It’s Still Impressive

There are currently only four critic reviews for Silksong, so it seems likely the score will drop over time, but even so, it is a mighty accomplishment to be the highest-rated game of all time at any point. Its User Score stands at 8.7, with 851 scores. Ironically, while Silksong has the highest Critic Score ever, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has the highest User Score ever — both 2025 games.

Silksong has been one of the most anticipated games of 2025, and with it finally out, both critics and fans seem to be mostly enjoying the game. The game’s difficulty was a point of contention, though, leading to the game’s first update lowering the difficulty.

Silksong has been in active development since 2019, and Team Cherry’s reasoning for its long development cycle was simply that they kept wanting to add more things to the game and have fun with it. It seems the game has met or exceeded most players’ expectations, with particular praise aimed at the game’s smooth platforming and iconic challenge.

Even though the Metacritic score will likely drop, it’s unheard of for a game to debut with a perfect score on Metacritic. There are artificial reasons for its currently higher-than-everything-ever-released score, of course, but even still, Hollow Knight: Silksong will likely be one of the biggest talking points of the rest of 2025 and in the future.
