As players progress through The Blood of Dawnwalker‘s main story and begin to dismantle Brencis’ Court of Vrakhiri vassals, one of the first targets most players encounter will be Ambrus due to his presence in the Northern region of Vale Sangora. As you explore the area and discover more details about Ambrus’ role in transporting blood slaves throughout the area, you can slowly chip away at his operation through various quests and eventually will have to take him on head to head in a late-night duel.

WARNING: THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE BLOOD OF DAWNWALKER !!!Before doing so, you will have a chance to accept Iulian’s proposal to weaken Ambrus during the fight by poisoning him with the nobleman’s blood, though this is not strictly required to defeat Ambrus by any means, and your intentions at the end of the Ambrus duel may impact whether you want to poison him or not. Once you initiate the fight, Ambrus will be weakened by the poison, making the fight slightly easier, but there’s a downside if you intend to drain Ambrus’ blood.

What Happens If You Drain Ambrus’ Blood?

When you reach the end of the Ambrus fight, you’ll automatically jump to a cut scene where Coen is given two choices: to either drain Ambrus’ blood or to simply kill him outright. Importantly, if your vampire health is below one bar, you will not have any time to make a selection and will basically automatically drain his blood, so if you want the choice to kill him, be sure to end the fight with at least one full health bar segment.

That said, draining Ambrus’ blood will likely be players’ first time being transported to Anachora, the demon realm that plays a central role in the deeper lore of The Blood of Dawnwalker universe and will be a recurring location throughout the game. Players will be transported to Anachora anytime they drain one of the main Vrakhir’s blood (i.e., Ambrus, Bakir, Xanthe, and Brencis), and each time, they are given the opportunity to “save” the vassal by “inviting them in.”

Whether you invite him in or leave him in Anachora, draining his blood will automatically unlock the Scarlet Shield vampire ability, which is one of several unique skills that can only be unlocked by consuming Vrakhir blood.

Should You Invite Ambrus In Or Leave Him In Anachora?

If you decide to drain Ambrus’ blood and find yourself in Anachora, it may not seem prudent to invite Ambrus in due to him being a real jerk and trying to kill you. That said, it’s actually a good idea to invite in any Court members whose blood you drain to make your endgame experience a bit easier. If you abandon them in Anachora and leave them to rot, they will make an appearance in Anachora during the final sequence and you’ll have to fight them there.

As such, inviting Ambrus in doesn’t have any major gameplay benefits that you wouldn’t acquire by simply killing him or leaving him to rot in Anachora, but you will occasionally hear his voice in Coen’s head throughout the game.

What Happens If You Kill Ambrus & Don’t Drain His Blood?

If you decide not to drain Ambrus’ blood and simply kill him, you will miss out on your first trip to Anachora and Ambrus will simply die. You’ll still unlock all the same loot and vampire perks that you would, should you make any other decision, and if you poisoned Ambrus with Iulian’s blood, you will avoid getting poisoned as well. Further, you’ll still be able to unlock the Scarlet Shield ability, but will need to navigate to your inventory and consume the Vial of Ambrus’ Blood item to do so.

That said, Ambrus will end up in Anachora and will make an appearance in the endgame battle against Brencis alongside any other court members you don’t spare. This won’t be an issue if you are well-prepared by the time you enter the final battle, but may be quite challenging if you decide to go in under-leveled.

You Should Drain Ambrus’ Blood & Invite Him In

Even if you choose to poison Ambrus, it’s a good idea to drain his blood and then invite him in afterward, primarily so that your endgame experience is a bit less challenging. Ambrus will beg for your mercy in Anachora, and Coen will be averse to inviting him in at first, but Ambrus will be extremely grateful afterward. Draining his blood isn’t essential, but you’ll miss out on an early visit to Anachora and will have to fight him in the final sequence.

Ultimately, draining Ambrus’ blood and inviting him in are not dealbreakers if you decide to go another route, and this decision will not impact gameplay much in The Blood of Dawnwalker as you end up with the same rewards one way or another, and by the time you reach the endgame, you’ll be more than prepared for the additional challenge assuming you don’t invite Ambrus in.
