Senegal coach Pape Thiaw has been banned for five matches and fined £72,000 as part of a raft of sanctions for the chaotic scenes that marred the Africa Cup of Nations final against Morocco earlier this month.

Thiaw ordered his players from the field in protest at two late decisions that saw his side have a goal disallowed and then Morocco awarded a penalty.

They returned 14 minutes later only for the hosts’ Brahim Diaz to miss the spot-kick that would have handed Morocco the trophy. Senegal subsequently won the game 1-0 in extra-time.

Everton forward Iliman Ndiaye, Crystal Palace’s Ismaila Sarr and Paris Saint-Germain full-back Achraf Hakimi were also hit with bans. All the sanctions relate to CAF matches only so will not impact preparations for this summer’s World Cup.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) today dished out the punishments, which included:

• A five-match ban for Thiaw and a fine of $100,000 (£72,000)
• A two-match ban for Senegal forward Ndiaye
• A two-match ban for Senegal forward Sarr
• A fine of $615,000 (£445,000) for the Senegal Football Federation for the misconduct of its technical staff, players and supporters.
• A two-match ban for Morocco captain Hakimi, one of which is suspended for a year
• A three-match ban for Morocco winger Ismael Saibari and a fine of $100,000 (£72,000)
• A fine of $200,000 (£144,000) for the Moroccan Football Federation for the conduct of the stadium ball boys
• A fine of $115,000 (£83,000) for the Moroccan Football Federation for the conduct of its players and supporters

Saibari’s fine relates to incidents where he and the Moroccan ball boys in Rabat repeatedly tried to snatch a towel from Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy.
