Zach Braff and creator Bill Lawrence just revealed to ScreenRant their plans for the future of Scrubs after its recent revival.
The comedy initially aired on NBC for seven seasons beginning in 2001. When the network chose not to renew Scrubs, ABC saved the series, which continued airing for another two seasons. After a 16-year break, Scrubs is back for a 10th season with original cast members Braff, Donald Faison, Sarah Chalke, Judy Reyes and John C. McGinley.
While the Scrubs revival has yet to be renewed by ABC, Lawrence and Braff are already planning for several more seasons beyond the current one, which ends this week. In an interview with Ash Crossan at PaleyFest, Lawrence admitted that he absolutely wants to continue the series.
When asked how long it might run for, the creator and executive producer said he didn’t know, but that it was up to Braff, who said that five seasons would be a solid run for the revival.
The actor explained that “five’s a great number” before adding, “Everyone should be happy with five. Whatever Bill wants.”
Bill Lawrence: “None of us would be here if we weren’t planning to still do the show…I don’t know many, many [seasons]. That’s going to be on that guy…Hey, Zach, how many seasons of the show do you want to do?”
Zach Braff: “I think five.”
Bill Lawrence: “So probably five.”
Zach Braff: “Thanks, Bill.”
Bill Lawrence: “Cool. We okay saying that we’re done with that, then? Five?”
Zach Braff: “I think five’s a great number. Everyone should be happy with five. Whatever Bill wants.”
Bill Lawrence: “There you go.”
Along with Braff, Faison, Chalke, Reyes and McGinley, the Scrubs revival also stars Joel Kim Booster, Robert Maschio, Phill Lewis, Ava Bunn, Jacob Dudman, David Gridley, Layla Mohammadi, Amanda Morrow, Andy Ridings, Michael James Scott, X Mayo and Vanessa Baye.
The current nine-episode season began with Braff’s character, JD, returning to Sacred Heart Hospital and replacing Dr. Perry Cox as Chief of Medicine, all while having to work alongside his ex, Dr. Elliot Reid, and deal with all the drama and mishaps from the current group of interns.
Lawrence, who spearheaded Scrubs 25 years ago, is back as an executive producer after creating Ted Lasso, Shrinking, Bad Monkey and Rooster, with Aseem Batra serving as showrunner.
Braff, Faison and Chalke are also executive producers for the revival, along with Neil Goldman, Garrett Donovan, Tim Hobert, Tad Quill, Bill Callahan, Josh Bycel, Jonathan Groff, Jeff Ingold, Liza Katzer and Randall Keenan Winston.
The Scrubs revival was a hit right out of the gate, with a record-setting 11.4 million viewers tuning in to the two-episode premiere in late February. Since then, the show has been a solid performer for ABC. Critics have given Scrubs mostly positive reviews during its current incarnation, which has an 89% critic score and 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
ABC has already renewed 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Nashville, Grey’s Anatomy, High Potential, The Rookie, Will Trent and Abbott Elementary for the 2026-2027 television season, with freshman drama RJ Decker, sophomore comedy Shifting Gears and the Scrubs revival still awaiting word on their fates. Of these four series, Scrubs appears to have the best chance of a renewal.
The Scrubs season 10 finale airs Wednesday, April 15 at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
