Scary Movie Rotten Tomatoes Score Harshly Divides Critics & Audiences After 13-Year Return

Scary Movie‘s return could prove to be a scary disappointment.

The comedy franchise has produced a series of successful movies known for parodying well-known horror movies as well as including some jokes surrounding pop culture and the latest news. With six installments, Scary Movie 6 is truly the spiritual sequel to the first two films as Regina Hall and Anna Faris return with the Wayans family back behind and in front of the camera.

Despite having a 13-year absence from the franchise, the new Scary Movie installment is proving to cause a major divide on Rotten Tomatoes. Audiences gave a generous 71% rating, with some stating that the movie was “hysterical” and that the “Wayans brothers always push the envelope and make you laugh.” However, critics were far less generous and gave a shocking 27% rating based on 86 reviews.

Critics provided insight behind their reasoning and said that they were “offended,” it had “not one laugh,” and “At least it made for a better Scream than Scream 7.”

So far, Scary Movie 6 has one of the highest ratings in the franchise’s history on Rotten Tomatoes, with Scary Movie 5 delivering one of the lowest at a shocking 4%. However, not all is doom and gloom for the Wayans brothers return as the new installment has set an all-time franchise record at the box office during its opening weekend. Scary Movie opened with $56 million, which is the best opening in the 26 years since the franchise was created and was previously held by Scary Movie 3 at $49.7 million.

The movies mocked during Scary Movie include Scream, Get Out, Weapons, Scary Movie 1 & 2, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Halloween Requel Trilogy, M3GAN, Terrifier, A Quiet Place, Heretic, The Substance, Smile, Longlegs, Final Destination: Bloodlines, Sinners, and Ma. Director Michael Tiddes spoke with EW to explain the iconic Scream parodies:

“The key movies that they were parodying, kind of the heartbeat of the film, is Scream 5 [stylized Scream] and Scream 6. In Scream, they did a very similar thing of taking legacy cast and bringing new cast together to kind of contemporize the material from the original Scream.”

Scary Movie 6 is available to watch in theaters now.
