Scary Movie 6’s Box Office Sets Up A 2027 Comedy For Success

Scary Movie had a fantastic opening weekend at the box office, and its success is a great sign for a 2027 spoof comedy. The parody movie subgenre has produced many of Hollywood’s most classic comedies. Some of the most notable names within the subgenre are Jim Abrahams, and David and Jerry Zucker, who helmed Airplane! and The Naked Gun, Mel Brooks, who directed and co-wrote films, like Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, and Mike Myers who wrote and starred in the Austin Powers trilogy.

In 2000, the Wayans brothers made themselves notable names within the subgenre with the release of Scary Movie. The film parodied several popular horror films, like Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, and became a major hit, grossing over $278 million worldwide. In 2001, the Wayans returned for Scary Movie 2, which was also a hit, earning over $141.2 million worldwide. While the franchise did continue for three more films, it was not with the Wayans, who left after the second film.

Following Scary Movie‘s success, several more parody films were made in the 2000s, including Not Another Teen Movie, Epic Movie, Superhero Movie, Date Movie, Meet the Spartans, and Disaster Movie. The spoof subgenre did slow down in the 2010s, but it did return in 2025 with the new The Naked Gun. Starring Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., the film did well at the box office, earning around $102 million worldwide on a $42 million budget.

Scary Movie is the sixth installment in the franchise and the latest film in the parody movie resurgence, and also sees the Wayans Brothers return to this franchise. Despite mixed reviews from critics, the film had an excellent first weekend at the box office. It’s a strong indicator that the next major spoof film, 2027’s Spaceballs: The New One, could be a huge success.

2026’s Scary Movie was competing with Amazon MGM’s Masters of the Universe, but emerged victorious at the weekend box office. According to Variety, Scary Movie got the No. 1 spot in its opening weekend, earning $55 million domestically, and achieving the series’ best debut weekend in North America, passing Scary Movie 4, which made “$49.7 million (not adjusted for inflation).” It also earned the franchise’s best worldwide opening, grossing $105.5 million.

With a reported budget of “$30 million,” the latest installment in the horror spoof franchise is already a hit. The film has already passed the worldwide total for 2013’s Scary Movie 5, which earned around $78.4 million globally. The highest-grossing movie in the franchise is the original Scary Movie. The 2026 film still has more it needs to earn before it reaches the first film’s total gross, but it is off to an amazing start. It’s opening weekend also shows that audiences are still interested in spoof films, which is a promising sign before 2027’s Spaceballs sequel.

1987’s Spaceballs is a Star Wars parody directed and co-written by Brooks. The film parodied the original trilogy, introducing hilarious variants to franchise characters, such as Dark Helmet, Barf, and Yogurt. 40 years later, Spaceballs is returning for a sequel, titled The New One. Brooks is returning to produce and star in the film, along with several original cast members, such as Bill Pullman and Rick Moranis, as well as newcomers, like Lewis Pullman and Keke Palmer. Josh Gad, Dan Hernandez, and Benji Samit are writing the script.

While Spaceballs wasn’t a huge hit upon its release, it has built its fanbase over the years. It’s also a parody to one of Hollywood’s most popular franchises that has grown a lot since the original trilogy, giving The New One plenty of material to spoof. It certainly has a strong chance to outgross the original film, which made over $38.1 million worldwide.

Additionally, Scary Movie‘s success shows audiences are interested in spoof films, especially sequels. Like Scary Movie, Spaceballs 2 also includes the return of many of the first film’s originals. Given how popular the original film has become since its release, Spaceballs: The New One has strong box office potential, and could be the next big hit for the spoof genre.
