Rupert Grint on Potential Harry Potter Return Amid HBO Reboot

Almost 25 years after the Harry Potter film series kicked off, HBO is rebooting the franchise with a new cast for a new generation. Replacing Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, the central trio will be played by Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout. As of right now, only one franchise star is slated to return, but many fans have speculated about whether the original leads will (or should) return.

This interest has only heightened after Tom Felton, who played the antagonistic Draco Malfoy, returned to the Wizarding World. Not only that did Felton return, but he actually reprised his original role in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway. This resulted in a renewed interest in Grint, Radcliffe, or Watson doing the same.

Speaking with the BBC, Grint doesn’t know if he sees himself returning to the Harry Potter franchise. “Maybe in the future,” the star added. “Never say never, but for now, I think, as much as I loved it, I’m enjoying stepping outside of that world.”

Despite being hesitant to return himself, Grint supports the possibility of his own children appearing in a Harry Potter project down the line: “I don’t see why not. It was so much fun.” Additionally, he has a positive relationship with the series’ legacy.

It has a quite deep meaning to a lot of people of my generation, and even more to generations who are finding it now,” Grint added. “It’s great. It gives me a lot of pride. It was such a huge thing. I don’t think I’ll ever quite step out of his shadow, but I’m fine with that.

Recently, Grint also addressed Stout succeeding him as Ron, writing the younger actor a letter just like Radcliffe did for McLaughlin. The actor said, “I wrote him a letter, before they started, passing the baton as it were.”

It was really just wishing him all the best with it,” said Grint. “I had so much fun stepping into this world, and I hope he has the same experience.” As for his own experience, he stated that he “still remember[s] every second of it” and thinks it’s great that the show “is going to be its own thing.” Moveover, Grint quipped that he does see some “family resemblance” between himself and Stout.

HBO’s Harry Potter reboot is slated to debut in 2027, though its exact release date has yet to be revealed. Even though its first season has not aired, season 2 is reportedly in the early stages of development.
