Rohit Sharma’s return timeline revealed as Hardik Pandya gives key fitness update amid MI struggles in IPL 2026

The Mumbai Indians (MI) continue to endure a turbulent campaign in the Indian Premier League 2026, and the absence of Rohit Sharma has only deepened their concerns. Following another disappointing defeat, skipper Hardik Pandya provided a crucial update on Rohit’s fitness, leaving fans anxious about when the veteran opener will return to action.

Another high-scoring heartbreak at Wankhede for MI

Mumbai Indians’ clash against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium turned into yet another frustrating outing for the home side.

Batting first after winning the toss, MI produced a strong total of 243, which looked competitive on a batting-friendly surface. Ryan Rickelton led the charge with a magnificent unbeaten 123, anchoring the innings with authority. He was well supported by Will Jacks, who added a quickfire 42, while Pandya chipped in with a handy 30. Despite the imposing score, there was a feeling MI had not maximized their innings — something that would come back to haunt them.

In response, SRH delivered a fearless and clinical chase. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma set the tone early with aggressive strokeplay, dismantling MI’s bowling plans. Heinrich Klaasen ensured the momentum never dipped, guiding the chase with composure.

Mumbai’s bowling lacked penetration and control throughout the innings. Even spearhead Jasprit Bumrah endured an off day, finishing wicketless and conceding heavily. SRH chased down 244 comfortably, registering the highest successful run chase at the venue and handing MI yet another crushing defeat.

Hardik Pandya provides key update on Rohit Sharma

Ahead of the game, Pandya addressed Rohit’s availability at the toss, offering a candid assessment of the senior batter’s fitness. After opting to bat first on what he described as a good pitch, Pandya revealed that Rohit is still not fully ready to return to match action.

He stated that Rohit would need “a couple more games” to regain full fitness, adding that while the veteran is trying hard in training, his condition is “not up to the mark” yet.

“Rohit will need a couple more games, he’s trying, but it’s not up to the mark,” said Pandya.

The update suggests that MI will have to continue without one of their most experienced players for the immediate future — a significant blow given their current situation in the tournament.

Why Rohit’s return is crucial for MI’s campaign

Mumbai Indians’ defeat to SRH marked their sixth loss in eight matches, leaving them in a precarious position on the points table. With just two wins so far, their playoff hopes are already hanging by a thread.

One of those rare positives this season came when Rohit Sharma delivered a blistering knock, underlining his value at the top of the order. His ability to provide strong starts and anchor innings has been missing in recent matches, putting additional pressure on the middle order.

Beyond his batting, Rohit’s presence brings leadership, composure, and big-match experience — qualities that MI have clearly lacked during crunch moments this season.

With the tournament entering a decisive phase, Mumbai’s path ahead looks increasingly challenging. They not only need to start winning consistently but also require key players like Rohit to return and make an immediate impact.
