Arjen Robben believes “you can never write off Real Madrid” in the Champions League, but has backed Bayern Munich to progress in their quarter-final tie.
Bayern currently lead the tie 2-1, with Luis Diaz and Harry Kane securing a first-leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu last week.
However, Madrid are unbeaten in their last four away games against Munich (W3 D1).
In the Bundesliga era (since 1963-64), only two sides have managed to go five in a row without losing away to Bayern: Werder Bremen (five from 1989-1992 and 2007-2010) and Koln (five from 2003-2010).
And since the start of the 2013-14 season, Madrid (three) have the joint-most away wins against Bayern across all competitions, despite only playing there four times in this period.
Robben featured for both sides during his playing days, representing Los Blancos for two years before 10 seasons with Bayern.
He scored and assisted once in 11 Champions League games for Madrid, while directly contributing to 37 goals (25 goals, 12 assists) in 70 games for Bayern in UEFA’s premier competition.
The Dutchman won the Champions League with Bayern in 2012-13, and he has backed the Bundesliga side to overcome Madrid on Wednesday.
“You can never write off Real,” Robben told the Bayern website. “I’m impressed by the fact that they always stay calm.
