WARNING! This article contains SPOILERS for Dexter: Resurrection season 1, episode 9!With the warm response to Dexter: Resurrection episode 9, the series is on a massively successful episode streak that further justifies the franchise’s return after New Blood. Of course, the notion that the sequel would be a proper return to form began with Dexter: Resurrection’s initial reviews, which culminated in the franchise’s record-high Rotten Tomatoes score of 95% from critics.
As Dexter: Resurrection’s characters continue to meet brutal ends while dark twists come from every corner of New York for the Morgans, the series has certainly lived up to its early hype from critics. Further emphasizing this point, the audience ratings for Dexter: Resurrection’s episodes on IMDb have maintained unprecedented, consistently high numbers – a feat that seemed unlikely after New Blood’s divisive ending.
Dexter: Resurrection Season 1 Has The Franchise’s Best Episode Rating Streak Ever
Since Dexter: Resurrection season 1, episode 3, every single subsequent episode currently holds an IMDb rating above 9/10. That’s an extremely difficult victory to achieve for drama TV shows, especially from a series whose past several seasons have been divisive among audiences.
Dexter: Resurrection’s past seven consecutive episodes having scores above 9/10 is rivaled by very few other crime dramas, with one other example being the highly-revered Breaking Bad season 5. However, with Dexter: Resurrection season 1 only having 10 episodes total, it still won’t be able to catch up to Breaking Bad season 5’s record, which had 12 consecutive episodes with ratings of 9/10 or above on IMDb.
Episode # | IMDb Rating |
|---|---|
1 | 8.9 |
2 | 8.8 |
3 | 9.3 |
4 | 9.7 |
5 | 9.2 |
6 | 9.5 |
7 | 9.5 |
8 | 9.1 |
9 | 9.8 |
Currently, Dexter: Resurrection’s highest-rated episode is “Touched by an Angel,” which culminated in the death of original character Angel Batista. Episodes 1 and 2 remain the sequel series’ lowest-rated entries, though they still have incredibly impressive averages of 8.9/10 and 8.8/10, respectively.
With “Touched by an Angel” now having Resurrection’s highest score yet, the stakes are higher for the anticipated season 1 finale. While New Blood and Dexter’s original series finales were incredibly divisive outings among audiences, Resurrection will hopefully curb that trend for season 1. Since Dexter: Original Sin’s ending was well-received, the prospect of another satisfying season finale is much greater.
Dexter: Resurrection Season 1 Is Indisputably The Best Since The OG Season 4
For years after Dexter season 4 ended, there had been debates surrounding whether it should have been the series finale. Dexter season 4 is widely considered the show’s best, with the series taking some notable downturns in the subsequent four installments before its controversial season 8 ending.
Even then, Dexter: New Blood sought to redeem the original finale with Dexter Morgan’s return. While the limited revival had a promising start, the finale’s backlash would end up souring the season’s overall legacy. Dexter: Resurrection, however, has been consistently impressive in its quality for the first nine of ten episodes, with twists, turns, and emotional conflicts that hark back to season 4’s success.
