Red Dead Redemption 1 Gets RDR2-Style First-Person Mode You Can Play Now

If you’ve exhausted your playtime in RDR2, then you might want to consider hopping over to the first Red Dead Redemption, especially if you haven’t played it before. RDR1 recently came to PS Plus, and it’s available on almost all modern platforms now. If you’re playing on PC, then there’s a new mod worth checking out.

Over on NexusMods, you can find a mod called “First Person,” which does exactly what that kind of name implies. It allows you to play through Red Dead Redemption 1 in first-person. While similar mods have come to Red Dead Redemption 2 before, you can play it pretty much entirely in first-person already, so it’s nice to see this perspective in RDR1 now.

The OG Red Dead Redemption In First-Person Looks Awesome

The trailer for the “First Person” mod in Red Dead Redemption 1 can be viewed on YouTube (or above). It looks pretty amazing, honestly, essentially turning the game into a first-person shooter. In the video, we see through the eyes of John Marston as he shoots a bunch of people and racks up that bounty. We also see his eyes growing dim, with an increasingly dark red veil cast over his eyes, as he’s shot more and eventually dies.

From an immersion standpoint, it’s great. The mod does an excellent job of making it feel like YOU are John Marston. And in the video, everything appears to be running pretty smoothly. It’s been a while since I’ve played RDR1 (like, 13 years), but this is the kind of thing that can get me to replay a game after such a long time.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Has Something Similar

RDR2 bowl of stew from a first-person perspective.

Mods for Red Dead Redemption 1 feel increasingly rare, with most of the fanbase turning their attention toward RDR2, which is certainly no stranger to mods of this caliber. Some of the best mods since the game released in 2018 ranged from obscenely silly to incredibly engrossing. And RDR2 in first person is already a real, official thing, so it’s great to see RDR1 in this manner too.

At this point in its lifespan, it’s unlikely Red Dead Redemption 1 will ever get an official first-person mode like this, so it’s great to see modders taking matters into their own hands. Based on the video, the “First Person” mod looks pretty incredible, and if I played on PC, I’d definitely check it out. If you are on PC, then give a try.
