In Reacher season 4’s episode 2, the Alan Ritchson character barely escapes a CIA black site with Tamara Green and Jacob Merrick. The three characters are fortunate enough to find a freelance journalist, Russell, waiting to pick them up in his car and help them escape the CIA before it is too late. This is when Jack Reacher subtly mentions something about the Special Investigators.
When the journalist asks them why the CIA abducted them and held them captive in the black site, Tamara seems as clueless as Jacob. She confronts him and asks him what his sister was involved in to make the CIA so determined to take them down. This is when Reacher claims to know someone who can help them if they manage to get down at DC.
To his surprise, this is when the journalist reveals they are already in DC. With what follows, Jack Reacher seemingly gets pulled in other directions, preventing him from reaching out to his DC connection. While the show does not explicitly reveal who Reacher was referring to as his “DC connection,” he would only trust a handful of people with something this important and dangerous.
Since Neagley is based in Chicago, it seems unlikely he was referring to her in Reacher season 4‘s episode 2. Meanwhile, others, like Finlay, Roscoe, and Duffy, also do not seemingly live anywhere near Washington DC. The only reliable character from Reacher’s past who resides in Washington DC is David O’Donnell (played by Shaun Sipos in Reacher season 2).
David O’Donnell was a Captain in the U.S. Army before Reacher handpicked him as one of the members of the 110th Special Investigation Unit. In Reacher season 2, he was also among the three secondary leads, alongside Dixon and Neagley, who helped Jack Reacher find the truth about the mysterious murders of their former team members.
Reacher season 2 revealed that David O’Donnell embraced civilian life as a family man after retiring from the military. He still could have used his military connections and insights to help Reacher and his friends. Considering how Washington DC has been established as one of the key settings from Reacher season 4, it is possible that the Alan Ritchson character will eventually reach out to him for help.
David O’Donnell Would Have Been The Perfect Reacher Character To Bring Back
In Reacher season 2, Alan Ritchson’s Jack Reacher and Shaun Sipos’ David O’Donnell had an incredible buddy-cop dynamic. Their relationship almost seemed reminiscent of Reacher’s funny dynamic with Finlay but with the added history of brothers-in-arms who have known each other for years. David particularly felt like a great addition to season 2’s roster because of how his lifestyle contrasted with Reacher’s.
A subplot in Reacher season 2 revolved around both Reacher and O’Donnell poking fun at each other’s lifestyles but eventually agreeing that they were both happy with the lives they had chosen after the military. It would have been interesting to see how this narrative would have potentially continued in the show’s season 4.
O’Donnell and Reacher’s dynamic would also have been a source of some hilarious moments where both characters would have tried to overpower each other with dry humor and mockery. The character’s return would also have been a great callback to Reacher season 2’s ending, where Neagley reminded him that his military friends were his family.
Hopefully, Reacher season 4’s future episodes will get a chance to feature a David O’Donnell cameo now that he has already been subtly referred to in episode 2.
