South Africa have named a near full-strength squad for their home ODI series against Australia, with regular captain Temba Bavuma set to lead the side. The selection includes experienced campaigners Quinton de Kock and David Miller, who remain part of the team’s plans despite not holding central contracts.

The series will be an important opportunity for South Africa to test their preferred combinations ahead of the 2027 World Cup. They will also use upcoming ODI assignments against Bangladesh and England to assess players competing for places across the batting and bowling departments.

Quinton de Kock and David Miller return for Australia series

De Kock has been included for all three ODIs against Australia, underlining his continued importance to South Africa in the 50-over format. Miller has also been selected and is expected to feature in the Australia series before missing the Bangladesh assignment because of his ILT20 commitments.

Aiden Markram will only be available for the second and third ODIs, while Ryan Rickelton, Tristan Stubbs and Tony de Zorzi are also part of the batting group. Their performances will be closely watched as South Africa assess their options at the top of the order and in the middle.

Gerald Coetzee returns as Kagiso Rabada misses out

Gerald Coetzee has earned his first ODI call-up since the 2023 World Cup after overcoming a series of injuries. He has recently represented South Africa A and will now return to the senior setup as Kagiso Rabada continues his recovery from a hamstring injury.

Coetzee will join Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, Corbin Bosch, Kwena Maphaka and Ottneil Baartman in the pace attack. Keshav Maharaj and Bjorn Fortuin are the two specialist spinners in the squad, giving South Africa a balanced bowling unit.

Dewald Brevis left out as World Cup plans take shape

Dewald Brevis, who impressed during the Namibia T20I tri-series, has not been selected for the Australia ODIs as he prepares for the Test summer through first-class cricket. He remains in contention for future ODI opportunities, with Bangladesh another chance for him to stake his claim.

South Africa are using the months ahead of the 2027 World Cup to settle their combinations and define player roles. The Australia series will be the first major step in that process, with the selectors set to continue rotating options before the tournament.
