The Boys‘ perfect replacement is out now on Prime Video, and the streamer’s new superhero series offers an interesting storyline that is close to what the final season of The Boys set out to do. There have been many successful live-action superhero shows over the last few years. While DC’s Arrowverse series have all ended, other franchises are alive and well.

A shortage of superhero shows is unlikely to ever be on the cards, as every streamer has its own set of super-powered characters running around or explores a gritty and grounded comic book universe. A few excellent examples of hit superhero series include Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again, HBO Max’s The Penguin, Netflix’s recent The WONDERfools, and more.

Prime Video understands the genre like few streaming services do, as it is the home of two of the most violent and compelling superhero series of the decade. Among Prime Video’s best shows are The Boys and Invincible. While the latter is planned to go on for quite a few more seasons, The Boys ended with the season 5 finale on May 20. Thankfully, it did not take long for a replacement to emerge.

Only a week after The Boys ended, Spider-Noir swung onto Prime Video this Wednesday, May 27. All eight episodes of the standalone Spider-Man series, focused on Nicolas Cage’s Ben Reilly, a private detective with a superhero past, are now available on the streaming service. Spider-Noir is The Boys‘ replacement in multiple ways, including in terms of a key story.

Spider-Noir Repeats A Core The Boys Season 5 Storyline

There did not seem to be any way to do it after he took V-1 and became fortified against the virus that killed Supes. Thankfully, the boys were able to recreate the experiment that gave Soldier Boy his energy blast that takes away other Supes’ powers, with Kimiko inheriting that ability and proceeding to use it to strip Homelander of his powers, which allowed Butcher to kill him. The Boys season 5’s finale also saw other characters lose their powers.

A week later, Prime Video’s The Boys replacement, Spider-Noir, delivers a similar story. While Nicolas Cage’s darker version of Spider-Man does not possess any power-stripping energy blast from his chest, a cure for superpowers plays a major role in the Marvel series. Spider-Noir eventually uses that not only to have Ben Reilly wrestle with his life as a superhero, but also to cure multiple villains who were dying from their mutations. As such, Spider-Noir repeats a key The Boys season 5 storyline, with super-powered individuals having their powers taken away being once again a main aspect of a show.

Prime Video’s Spider-Noir Is Only The First The Boys Replacement

While Spider-Noir has some thematic ties to The Boys, both being darker and more violent superhero shows, as well as directly connecting through its repeat of the season 5 Homelander storyline, another upcoming Prime Video series is The Boys‘ best replacement. That would be 2027’s Vought Rising, which exists in the same superhero universe as a direct prequel to The Boys, focused on Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy. The Boys season 5 planted the seeds for Vought Rising, setting up characters and storylines for the superhero show set in the 1950s.

After the first trailer for Vought Rising was released, it became clear that the new superhero series would serve as The Boys‘ perfect replacement. Not only are The Boys actors like Ackles, Aya Cash (Stormfront), and Mason Dye (Bombsight) returning in main roles in the Prime Video series, but Vought Rising also has the same hyper-violent and satirical take on superheroes. It will also show how Vought grew to become the global power that the company was in The Boys. Spider-Noir serves as the appetizer for the main course that is Vought Rising in terms of The Boys replacements.
