Pride And Prejudice Meets Beauty And The Beast In 4-Part Drama Now Streaming For Free

Not only is one recent Regency romance show an ideal blend of Pride and Prejudice and Beauty And The Beast, but the series is free to view on Roku right now. While the success of Netflix’s Bridgerton opened the floodgates for the romance genre’s many subsequent hit shows and movies in 2020, it is still striking to see just how many romance novel adaptations have blown up in the last few years.

In terms of shows that directly owe their existence to Bridgerton’s breakout popularity, readers can look to both Prime Video’s alternate history romance My Lady Jane and Apple TV’s The Buccaneers, loosely based on the unfinished Edith Wharton novel of the same name. However, there are also countless non-historical romance novel adaptations that have parlayed the success of Bridgerton into a broader revival of romance novel adaptations, creating the industry boom that many commentators anticipated after the success of the 50 Shades of Grey movies.

There is Prime Video’s college romance Off Campus, Crave’s 2025 adaptation of author Rachel Reid’s novel Heated Rivalry, and Prime Video’s Carley Fortune series Every Year After, and this is without even mentioning the numerous Emily Henry movies and shows in the works. With so many projects to pick from in the genre, it is tough for any new show to stand out. However, the fact that Seeking Persephone is both a mix of Beauty And The Beast and Pride and Prejudice and free to stream on Roku makes the show an easy recommendation.

Based on the first book in author Sarah M. Eden’s six-novel Lancaster Family series, originally published in 2008, Seeking Persephone is a four-part romantic drama that follows the story of the eponymous Persephone Lancaster. Faced with the imminent financial ruin of her family, Persephone marries the infamously unfriendly, badly scarred Duke of Kielder, anticipating a fairly grim future for herself but glad to have saved her family’s fortunes.

When Persephone arrives at the Duke’s remote home, she soon learns his cold and uncaring attitude is as unforgiving as the wintry wasteland where she now lives. However, in an unconventional spin on the Beauty And The Beast myth, Persephone gradually finds herself warming to the Duke, and the Duke is even more surprised to see his own uncertainty give way to unlikely passion. Compared to the R-rated antics of Bridgerton, this Regency romance is fairly reserved, but that’s part of the show’s charm.

Why Seeking Persephone Is The Perfect Regency Romance To Binge

Seeking Persephone is currently streaming on Peacock, but the show is also available to view for free in its entirety on The Roku Channel for free, albeit with ads. With only four episodes, Seeking Persephone is an ideal binge for fans of the genre, as its sweet, self-contained story will appeal to both fans of Regency romances more broadly and anyone searching for a less supernatural, more grounded retelling of Beauty and The Beast more specifically.

While some adaptations of Jane Eyre have been known to frame Jane’s marriage to Rochester in these terms, the presence of Bertha pretty massively mangles that script and ensures that the famous novel is a little too dark to function as a romance. Since Seeking Persephone is based on Eden’s original novel, the show has no such grim twists hiding in its story and can pull off a more escapist, hopeful story.

Sweeter and more slow moving than many of its bodice-ripping competitors, Seeking Persephone bucks the trend of period romance stories where characters act ahistorically brash and sassy. Anyone who was let down by Netflix’s corny Persuasion adaptation may well feel at home in Seeking Persephone’s charming mix of Pride and Prejudice and Beauty And The Beast, where a slow pace and more reserved character interactions aren’t viewed as inherently bad things.
