Pokémon Winds and Waves is already garnering a lot of interest among fans, and we really didn’t see a lot with that inaugural reveal video. While there were some crucial confirmations about returning Pokémon, other than the three starters, there wasn’t a ton of info on new Pokémon.
Plus, the setting was teased, but not named, or expanded upon in any way. Outside of leaks we also don’t know the overarching storyline or goal. There’s plenty left to speculate about as we enter the 10th Generation of Pokémon, including the evolutionary lines for the Pokémon we do know about.
To that end, Reddit has been chatting up a storm, and the results have been pretty positive overall.
Thanks to the efforts of Reddit user SuburbanLegend_27, the community is united over their evolutionary designs for Browt, Pombon, and Gecqua. They managed to craft the second and third of each evolutionary line for each new Gen 10 starter, and the results are fantastic.
One fan writes: “Damn, I always figured I’d be incredibly disappointed by Pombons evolution, but that’s assured now that I know what perfection looks like. Seriously though, I so wish these were real, they are all so cool.”
Another writes: “I like Browt’s evolution you did. If the final evo was slightly bigger and had an extra pair of legs, it’d be a pretty cool Griffin. Especially if it’s a Grass/Flying, it’s best to make the wings slightly bigger. I like your concept of a dog/lion for Pombon’s evolution. I always thought it’d evolve into something bear coded. And Gecqua’s evolution is so Swampert but skinny and the purple/pink patterns look so cool.”
This fan has a lot to say about the various evolutionary lines throughout the series: “The same thing they’ve been thinking for 13 years: give the starters a humanoid build and a human job. Gen 6 is the one gen that actually pulled it off well and felt clever, with everything else after that feeling forced. They were a classic RPG party (tank, mage, and DPS) and they needed those specific jobs for the concept to work. Name a more iconic trio of RPG party roles then that.”
Overall, these are pretty thoughtful designs, and I can see Game Freak going in a similar direction to them. As SuburbanLegend_27 notes, “one of those middle evos is particularly ugly” for Browt, but it’s entirely possible that Game Freak could go the same route. Those middle evolutions are tricky to nail and aren’t always popular.
The wait for Pokémon Winds and Waves is going to be tough at this point. It’s entirely possible that we might not get any info on it at all until 2027, especially if it turns out to be a Q2 or later release.
