Pokémon Officially Makes Major New Type Announcement

Pokémon is in the midst of its 30th anniversary celebrations, and it has been an absolutely packed year so far, with dozens of major announcements and huge releases still on the way. The biggest reveal came during February’s Pokémon Presents, when The Pokémon Company officially unveiled Winds & Waves, the next mainline game coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2027.

Fans have also been treated to the return of Pokémon FireRed & LeafGreen on Nintendo Switch, alongside releases and updates for Pokémon Pokopia, Pokémon Champions, and other ongoing titles. The anniversary celebrations have also stretched well beyond the games themselves, seeing partnerships with major brands for an enormous assortment of commemorative merchandise, including a sprawling Adidas footwear collection and ColourPop’s Eeveelution makeup line.

With the special Pokémon TCG: 30th Celebration expansion on the way this September, fans got yet another major huge announcement at the PokémonXP event in San Francisco over the weekend, with a brand-new type officially on the way this October (via CR).

According to a new update, Pokémon will officially introduce dual-typing in an upcoming TCG set this October, marking the start of a new era for the beloved franchise. The new set will also introduce new EX starters, as well as an update indicating that expansion packs may start to release more regularly than the current once-a-month rollout schedule.

The announcement was made during PokémonXP, held alongside the 2026 Pokémon World Championships in San Francisco, where The Pokémon Company revealed Mega Mewtwo X EX as the first dual-type card coming to Pokémon TCG Pocket. The card will count as both Psychic and Fighting, potentially giving it access to a much broader range of type-based strategies while also allowing it to hit Pokémon weak to either of those types for additional damage.

Mega Mewtwo X ex is currently confirmed as a Basic card with 180 HP, featured in the YouTube trailer above, showing that its Dual Impact attack can deal additional damage whenever a Stadium is in play. October will also introduce First Partner Pokémon EX cards, beginning with Piplup EX and Fuecoco EX. Piplup can accelerate Water Energy onto a Benched Pokémon, while Fuecoco can dramatically increase its damage output after taking damage itself.

The upcoming cards will kick off a new series of TCG Pocket expansions, although an exact October release date and full card list have yet to be announced. Typically, new sets release to TCG Pocket on the final Thursday of the month, so keep an eye out for new Pokémon updates in the coming weeks.
