Pochettino thrilled by growing chemistry in USA squad

Mauricio Pochettino is excited to keep seeing the chemistry build between his United States players as they prepare for a friendly against Canada.

Pochettino’s side have impressed during the extended international break, winning all three of their matches so far.

They began with a 4-1 win over Peru, before beating Chile 4-2 and brushing aside Mexico 3-0 last time out.

Pochettino has shaken things up following their World Cup campaign, introducing a host of youngsters into his squad as he attempts to find a balance between youth and experience.

It has so far worked out for him, and the Argentinian is excited to see the relationships within the squad continue to go from strength to strength.

“Even if we are competing a lot and traveling, and that can affect [them], we are going to be ready for [Canada],” Pochettino said.

“Fresh energy, and I think it’s a good opportunity for continuous growing in that camp.

“We need to keep going, to build that chemistry between the senior players with the new players. I think that is one of the most important things that happened in this window: to have three weeks to build this relationship.

“It’s not easy, but I can tell you that the behavior of the players, the energy of the players, their mentality and commitment are amazing.

“That is why I want to congratulate the players and the staff in the nearly three-week window for the first time. We built that journey together. It was an amazing thing. I hope to finish the window in a very good way.”

The USA will face Jesse Marsch’s Canada, who have also won both of their matches during this break without conceding a goal.

They have beaten Chile and Peru in the last two weeks, with Jacob Shaffelburg and Jonathan David impressing for them in front of goal.

And Pochettino revealed that he had previously tried to sign David – now of Atletico Madrid – at club level, though he made no hints as to whether it was with Tottenham, Paris Saint-Germain or Chelsea.

“When we were in different clubs, he always was on our radar to try to sign him. That is true,” Pochettino added about David.

“It’s going to be a difficult player for us. We need to be focused on him, of course, because he’s one of the greatest strikers in the world.

“Not only here or in Europe, but in the world.”
