Over the course of the year, Sony has gone from riding high to picking up the pieces after making two jaw-dropping announcements. Back in May, Sony revealed that it would no longer be releasing PC ports of its first-party games in an attempt to focus on complete exclusivity. As such, those wanting to play some upcoming PS5 exclusives such as Marvels: Wolverine and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet will have to purchase a console if they wish to play.
Now, to kick off July, Sony returned with yet another announcement, this time revealing that PlayStation consoles would no longer support physical releases, meaning that any game released and any future PlayStation console will now be 100% digital. This means that some of our most anticipated PS5 titles will now only be accessible via digital download from January 2028.
As you can imagine, both of these decisions have left PlayStation users feeling disheartened, and feeling as though gaming as we know it is truly over. However, for those unaffected by these decisions, and are still happy to stick with their PlayStations during the tough times, there is a limited-time way to get your hands on some free store credit.
Launched back in 2022, PlayStation Stars was a free-to-join loyalty program for PlayStation users which allowed them to earn points by playing or purchasing games. Over time, the points could be accumulated and eventually turned into free store credit courtesy of PS gift cards. However, another big Sony decision was choosing to shut down PlayStation Stars and, as such, the loyalty scheme will come to an end in November 2026.
That being said, there is one last way to get your hand on some PlayStation free credit if you are currently a PlayStation Stars member. This news comes after one user took to r/playstationstars to receive a recent email that they received. The email reminded the user that their PlayStation Stars points are expiring on 31 July, and they will need to spend them before then.
So, if you have previously been a PlayStation Stars member and there is a chance that you have unspent points, you have just a month to log in and spend them however you can before they are lost forever.
This is another stark reminder of the many changes that Sony has made over recent years, and as such, users took to the comments to share their thoughts on yet another end of an era.
“Man, Sony did us so dirty,” the top comment reads. “I was a mere 20-40 points from a $5 coupon and have been sitting on it for year watching it go down.” Another agreed, adding, “So much money we players pay for our games, and we can’t get rewarded for it even if/when the game ends up trashy, and we can’t get a refund for it because we already started the game.”
We can only hope that Sony introduces a brand-new program in the future that rewards players for sticking with PlayStation. However, at this point, that seems pretty unlikely.
