Parkinson hails Red Dragons’ derby win

It’s another big step towards the play-offs.

Wrexham claimed a 2-0 victory against Swansea City to solidify their grip on a Championship play-off spot.

Phil Parkinson’s side had slumped to defeat at the hands of Hull City on Tuesday, but bounced back in style against their Welsh rivals.

Nathan Broadhead finished off a well-worked Wrexham move to put them ahead in the 25th minute, and victory was sealed by a Liam Cullen own goal two minutes from the end of normal time.

Wrexham stay sixth, but move six points ahead of seventh-placed Southampton, who visit league leaders Coventry City on Saturday.

Parkinson paid tribute to his side after their third game in six days, a run that started with them pushing Premier League giants Chelsea to extra time in the FA Cup fifth round last Saturday before losing 4-2.

Wrexham players celebrate against Swansea

“I think with the week we’ve had, the emotion of the Chelsea game, then getting beaten three days later, it’s a huge win for us,” he told Sky Sports.

“The performance from us tonight was about character. There was a lot of resilience on display and there needed to be because Swansea are a good side.

“They like to keep the ball, sometimes they don’t do much with it, but they can make you uncomfortable.

“We always felt on the transition we could cause hurt them and the first goal is the most incisive bit of play of the whole game.”

Wrexham visit Watford on Tuesday, as they start a run of three straight away games.
