While there are plenty of killer casts in the streaming era, Paramount+’s long-awaited video game adaptation Among Us has most of them beat with the show’s sheer stockpile of star power. At one point in TV history, before the advent of streaming, one or two major stars were often enough to sell a series to viewers. Now, with every streaming service trying to outdo each other to maintain the attention of viewers, shows like HBO’s The White Lotus have ended up spending upwards of $100 million on massive ensemble casts full of A-list actors.
This phenomenon isn’t unique to streaming, but that is where the trend has been the most notable. From HBO’s Euphoria season 3 reuniting blockbuster stars like Sydney Sweeney, Jacob Elordi, Colman Domingo, and Zendaya for an eye-wateringly expensive final outing to Netflix stacking the cast of the disappointing political thriller Zero Day with stars like Robert De Niro, Lizzy Caplan, Dan Stevens, Jesse Plemons, Connie Britton, Matthew Modine, Angela Bassett, and Joan Allen, every streamer has gotten its check book out for at least one big project in recent years.
Although some of Paramount+’s hit Taylor Sheridan shows, like The Madison and Yellowstone’s spinoff 1923, featured major movie stars in lead roles, their latest starry effort doesn’t come from the streaming service’s golden boy writer/director. Instead, the long-awaited video game adaptation Among Us was created by Infinity Train showrunner Owen Dennis, and the sci-fi mystery comedy show has assembled one of the most impressive voice casts in the medium’s history.
Among Us’ TV Adaptation Has Been In The Works For 2 Years
Among Us follows the same story as its iconic video game inspiration, which went viral back in 2020 during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. Essentially a straightforward blend of murder mystery tropes and character comedy, Among Us centers on the crew aboard the spaceship Skeld who had been tasked with ferrying ore across the galaxy. The only issue is that they’ve picked up an alien interloper along the way, known as the Impostor, and the crew must work out which of their members is this murderous shape-shifting villain before they are picked off one by one.
While this premise has a lot in common with Agatha Christie’s iconic murder mystery And Then There Were None, viewers should not expect the Among Us adaptation to get quite so dark. The source game is a lot more light-hearted and playful than it might sound, affectionately parodying classic sci-fi horror movies like The Thing and Alien in its twisty story. However, while the show might not be serious, the talent of its cast certainly is.
What Among Us’ Cast Have Said About Voicing Characters For The Show
Among Us stars Ashley Johnson as security chief Purple and Fresh Off the Boat’s Randall Park as the ship’s captain Red, while Community’s Yvette Nicole Brown plays the HR manager Orange and Seinfeld’s iconic Wayne Knight plays the engineer Lime. Futurama’s Phil LaMarr plays the ship’s cook, Brown, while Beauty and the Beast’s Dan Stevens plays the ship’s doctor, Blue. Rounding out the cast are The Lord of the Rings leading man Elijah Wood, Patton Oswalt, Kimiko Glenn, Liv Hewson, and Debra Wilson.

Speaking to Gizmodo, Wood said that the project was an “easy yes” for him as it was “a murder mystery animated series,” all of which were ingredients that already intrigued the veteran actor on their own. Meanwhile, Park said that, although he never played Among Us before taking on the role, he was “pleased to learn how popular the game was, and really pleased to see how they adapted it into an animated show because they really had to flesh out these characters.”
Meanwhile, Glenn admitted that they knew nothing about the source game before signing up for their role, but said that this made the show all the more exciting since its entire twisty story was new. Thus, although Paramount+’s Among Us adaptation took a while to come together, its stacked voice cast alone justifies this lengthy wait.
