Pakistan announces appointment of a new head coach for the men’s Test team

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming World Test Championship assignments, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reshaped the leadership structure of their men’s red-ball team by appointing a new head coach. The move comes as part of PCB’s broader strategy to reinvigorate Pakistan’s Test cricket following a string of disappointing performances.

Former all-rounder appointed as Pakistan’s new head coach

Former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood has been appointed as the acting head coach of the men’s Test team. He takes over the position previously overseen by former pacer Aaqib Javed, who had temporarily filled the role following Jason Gillespie’s exit late last year. Mahmood will hold the post until the end of his current contract.

Mahmood is no stranger to the coaching circuit. He was Pakistan’s bowling coach between 2016 and 2019 and led the team during the 2023 T20I series against New Zealand. His domestic coaching résumé includes stints with multiple Pakistan Super League (PSL) teams such as Karachi Kings, Multan Sultans, and Islamabad United.

Challenges for the new coach

One of the biggest challenges awaiting Mahmood is to immediately prepare the side for the next leg of the WTC cycle, which kicks off with a demanding two-match home series against South Africa later this year. Tasked with reviving a team that has struggled for form in the longer format, Mahmood will need to quickly address the glaring issues exposed during Pakistan’s shocking home defeat to Bangladesh. The team’s position at the bottom of the current WTC standings only adds to the pressure, highlighting the urgent need for a turnaround. From fixing the team’s fragile batting order to sharpening the bowling unit’s consistency, Mahmood will have to instill discipline, clarity in roles, and a winning mindset. Balancing short-term results with long-term planning, and managing expectations from both the board and fans, will be critical tests in his early days as head coach.
