Star Wars is fairly fascinating in terms of how fluidly and successfully it can bridge tonal chasms and represent any kind of audience demographic. For instance, if you want a sobering and politically charged drama/thriller about the Empire’s oppression and people struggling to survive under the weight of it, you have Andor; if you want a playful yet sincere action romp, you have The Mandalorian and, most recently, The Mandalorian and Grogu.

It’s a mystery why The Mandalorian hasn’t been adapted as a video game yet, considering how popular the show itself was, but also considering how well The Mandalorian’s first season events would translate to a game, such as having to craft beskar armor to acquire better gear and accepting miscellaneous bounties to earn credits. Now, with the prequel to The Mandalorian and Grogu being released, there’s even less excuse as to why we don’t have a Star Wars game featuring a Mandalorian protagonist.

The Mandalorian & Grogu Holds The Key To A Great Star Wars Game

Released earlier this week, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu – Danger in the Dark #1 is an original one-shot comic book acting as a prequel story for the Mandalorian and Grogu movie that came out a little while ago. From Mad Cave Studios’ kids imprint Papercutz, Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu – Danger in the Dark is adorable and lighthearted.

Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu – Danger in the Dark sees Din Djarin, Grogu, and a handful of Anzellan droidsmiths (popularized thanks to Star Wars’ adorable Babu Frik) traverse the underground lava tubes on Nevarro to disarm and retrieve “live ordnance.” This comic could be a nice tone for a Mandalorian and Grogu game to have, complete with an amusing supporting cast of Star Wars’ most beloved creatures and droids.

Interestingly, as Din, Grogu, and the Anzellans descend into the cavernous tunnels, the comic briefly depicts them from an anthill vivarium perspective that evokes the view of a 2/2.5D side-scroller, not unlike something gamers would see in a Hollow Knight or Hollow Knight: Silksong. The Mandalorian’s helmet torch attachment lights the crew’s way as they squeeze through narrow passageways and rappel further downward, and it’s not hard to see how brilliant a 2D Metroidvania Mandalorian and Grogu game could be, let alone a 2D Metroidvania Star Wars game in general.

Star Wars Games Must Keep Their Momentum Strong

A Mandalorian and Grogu game wouldn’t necessarily have to adapt Danger in the Dark and its story specifically. In fact, it could behave similarly to Danger in the Dark by being yet another adventure, canon or not, that depicts an epic journey or encounter the pair had.

Unfortunately, unless they appeared in an ensemble, like how we’re getting a Mandalorian character as a scripted Operator unit in the turn-based tactics game Star Wars Zero Company in a month, it’s probably unlikely that we’ll ever get a game that centers on a lone Mandalorian protagonist that isn’t Din. And, for better or worse, it’s even more unlikely that Grogu wouldn’t be with Din.

The influence of “Baby Yoda”/Grogu is arguably too powerful, and their iconography as a pair might be too inseparable now from a brand/IP standpoint. Fortunately, this pairing is basically better than peanut butter and chocolate, especially when it comes to potential avenues of gameplay, regardless of the genre that a Mandalorian and Grogu game may want to tackle.

A Mandalorian and Grogu game could be phenomenal, marrying gameplay between Din’s Mandalorian gadgetry and weaponry and Grogu’s Force abilities. For example, it would be spectacular to boost and hover around midair on Din’s jump pack while firing his IB-94 blaster pistol at enemies below, as Grogu clings to Din’s shoulder and either flings enemies about or hurls objects at them with the Force. Until a Mandalorian and Grogu game is ever announced, though, all we have is the hope that it’ll one day come in Star Wars’ galaxy far, far away.
