Among the oldest complaints in the Game of Thrones franchise relates to the same names that are passed down across almost every generation, and HBO’s next spinoff won’t make this problem any better. After Game of Thrones’ ending and the subsequent success of House of the Dragon, HBO is soon following up those outings with yet another prequel focused on House Targaryen’s family tree.

Slated for an early 2026 premiere, the upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms series takes place approximately 70 years after House of the Dragon and about 90 years before Game of Thrones. While the titular focus is on the hedge knight Ser Duncan “Dunk” the Tall, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms puts equal emphasis on the politics and family dynamics of that era’s sitting Targaryen royal family.

The most important of those Targaryens, perhaps unsurprisingly, bears an all-too-familiar moniker that Game of Thrones fans can’t help but remember. If Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon’s characters were tough to keep track of, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ new Targaryens will only exacerbate that complaint.

A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms Will Focus On Yet Another Aegon Targaryen

After the confusion around different Aegon Targaryens sent House of the Dragon’s war into full force, it’s ironic that Game of Thrones’ next series is centered around another Aegon Targaryen. While he’ll primarily go by his nickname “Egg,” the main character of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms alongside Dunk is the future King Aegon V Targaryen.

When A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms starts, Aegon is only a young boy with little expectations of him as the fourth son of King Maekar I Targaryen. He ends up becoming the squire to Ser Duncan the Tall, shaving off his Targaryen silver hair in order to disguise his identity on their travels.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms now makes differentiating between the franchise’s numerous Aegon Targaryens an even greater task. House of the Dragon still puts significant focus on Aegon the Conqueror in discussions of Aegon’s Song of Ice and Fire Dream, has King Aegon II Targaryen as one of its main characters, and features Rhaenyra’s young son Aegon the Younger as one of her silver-haired heirs.

Unlike many of the other Aegons, at least A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ character has a nickname to distinguish him better in discussions. After his brother Maester Aemon referred to him as “Egg” throughout Game of Thrones, it’s unlikely that fans will widely refer to Aegon V outside his affectionate nickname throughout A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.

Game Of Thrones’ Other Upcoming Prequel Series Will Follow The Franchise’s Aegon Problem

You probably guessed it, but the next biggest upcoming Game of Thrones spinoff in development focuses on another Aegon Targaryen. This one, however, is the most notable of the bunch, and the true namesake of the many other Aegon Targaryens who appear in the franchise. That would be King Aegon I Targaryen, who will lead Game of Thrones’ prequel series about Aegon’s Conquest.

Though it’ll be yet another series about an Aegon Targaryen, this focus is more than justified by focusing on theAegon Targaryen. Like A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms’ Aegon, at least this one also has a nickname that can help to differentiate him from the others in conversation. He won’t have won his “Conqueror” nickname until later in the series, but Game of Thrones fans can still use that moniker during the prequel.
