A new crime thriller is seeing a stunning surge in viewership after its finale.

Crime thrillers consistently rank among the most popular shows on television, from HBO’s True Detective (2014–), Netflix’s Mindhunter (2017–2019), Prime Video’s Cross (2024–), and many more. Now, a new crime thriller is seeing a stunning surge in viewership after its season 1 finale and potentially joining that list.

According to Disney (via Variety), Hulu’s Furious has amassed 43 million hours watched, with its season 1 finale seeing a 90% surge in viewership from its premiere on July 27, reaching that milestone in roughly five weeks. Based on its total viewing time and runtime, that figure equates to approximately 6.2 million estimated views.

However, that number does not represent the show’s total unique audience. Furious‘ first three episodes have been available since late July, while the finale has only been streaming for a matter of days, meaning many more viewers have likely watched at least part of the series. That audience is expected to grow as more viewers catch up with the finale.

Disney also revealed that Furious‘ finale generated 90% more views in its first day than the premiere did, suggesting the series steadily built momentum throughout its first season. Rather than losing steam after its launch, the crime thriller appears to have benefited from strong word of mouth and a growing audience.

The latest figures come shortly after Furious made its debut in Nielsen’s weekly streaming rankings, which are released with a four-week measurement delay. The series ranked No. 10 among streaming originals for the week of July 27 to August 2, when only three episodes were available. Its position could rise in subsequent rankings as Nielsen’s data begins to reflect the remainder of season 1.

Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, based on the 1987 film Black Widow, Furious follows a female FBI agent investigating a female serial killer who targets powerful men connected to a web of abuse. The main cast includes Emmy Rossum (Shameless) and Lola Petticrew (Say Nothing) in the lead roles, alongside Scoot McNairy, Jake Lacy, and Quincy Tyler Bernstine.

Rob Yang, Steve Way, Hope Davis, Danny McCarthy, and Peter McRobbie appear in recurring roles alongside Rob Delaney, Chloe Troast, Campbell Scott, Constance Shulman, Marcia DeBonis, Elise Kibler, Chloe Carrillo, Riley Vinson, and Nicholas Podany as guest stars.

In addition to its surge in viewership, Furious has received rave reviews, resulting in a stellar 98% Rotten Tomatoes score, with critics calling it a gripping crime thriller that delivers a tense and stylish ride that proves deeply rewarding for both its stars and viewers, powered by a riveting performance from Emmy Rossum.

With an 88% audience score, viewers also consider it an intense and addictive cat-and-mouse thriller that features a fierce performance from Emmy Rossum as FBI Agent Alice Black.

Furious season 2 has already been renewed by Hulu, and creator Elizabeth Meriwether has said that it will likely follow Alice and her boss, Nora Washington (Quincy Tyler Bernstine), the head of the FBI’s sex crimes unit, as they tackle a new case within the C20.
