Netflix’s Gritty Crime Thriller Based On Bestsellers Reveals Major Season 2 Production & Casting Update

Netflix’s hit crime thriller Dept. Q has several major updates.

Based on the bestselling novel by author Jussi Adler-Olsen, Dept. Q follows a small team of detectives who operate in the basement of an Edinburgh police station. While the department focuses on forgotten and previously unsolvable cases, the series also explores the complicated personal lives of the characters.

Netflix has officially kicked off production on Dept. Q season 2. And, the streamer has also released an impressive lineup of new cast members joining the series. A new press release revealed that filming for the hit crime thriller is now underway in Scotland, with the upcoming installment once again set in Edinburgh.

Dept. Q season 2 will see the return of Matthew Goode, who portrays Detective Chief Inspector Carl Morck. Joining him once again are Alexej Manvelov as Akram Salim, Leah Byrne as Detective Constable Rose Dickson, and Jamie Sives as Detective Sergeant James Hardy. The confirmed returning cast means that the first season’s core investigative team will reunite for the upcoming installment. Other returning cast members from Dept. Q season 1 include Mark Bonnar(Stephen Burns), Kate Dickie (Moira Jacobson), Aaron McVeigh (Jasper), and Sanjeev Kohli (Martin Fleming).

The upcoming chapter of the Netflix series will also introduce a massive lineup of fresh faces. Dept. Q season 2’s new cast consists of Aisling Franciosi (Kimmie), Greg Wise (Derek Powell), Nicholas Rowe (Thomas Fulton), Tony Curran (Winnie Calderwood), Hamish Clark (Christopher Herron), Alex Ferns (Phil Allenbeck), Ross Anderson (Ricky Daddario), Rebecca Root (June Lovesay), Isla Johnston (Agnes), and Amy Brenneman (Helen).

Netflix’s Dept. Q is based on a book series of the same name. It consists of ten books and centers on a talented but troubled homicide detective who is banished to a newly formed cold case unit in the basement of Copenhagen police headquarters. He works alongside an unconventional team of talented investigators to solve cold cases.

Aside from the Netflix series, Dept. Q has also had several film adaptations throughout the years. There are also four upcoming TV series based on the critically acclaimed novels on the way, such as The Scarred Woman (2026), Victim 2117 (2028), The Shadow Murders (2030), and Locked In (2032).

There is no confirmed release date for Dept. Q season 2 at the time of this article’s publication. All episodes of season 1 can currently be streamed on Netflix.
