Netflix’s Fantasy Mystery Dethrones Record-Shattering New Movie For No. 1 Chart Spot

Netflix’s new fantasy mystery film has ink-redibly snatched the No. 1 spot from a record-breaking hit on the streamer’s charts.

The streamer has released several popular movies this year, such as People We Meet on Vacation, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s The Rip, Alan Ritchson’s War Machine, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, the shark movie Thrash, Apex, and Swapped – one of which shattered records for the streaming service. But now, a new movie has come along and taken its place atop the charts.

3 Best Movies To Watch On Netflix This Weekend (#1 Is A New NYT Bestselling Mystery Adaptation)

Looking for a movie to watch on Netflix this weekend? The streaming service has a new mystery, a wild zombie film, and a powerful drama available.

Nearly a week after its release, Remarkably Bright Creatures has dethroned a record-shattering new movie for the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s chart. Directed by Olivia Newman (Where the Crawdads Sing), who co-wrote the script based on the 2022 novel by Shelby Van Pelt, the film follows an elderly cleaning lady who befriends a young drifter, observed by a Giant Pacific octopus.

Now, following its release on May 8, Remarkably Bright Creatures is No. 1 on Netflix’s Top 10 movies in the United States for today, May 14, dethroning Swapped after it broke Netflix’s record for the largest audience over a seven-day period for an animated movie, amassing 38.7 million views.

Today, Remarkably Bright Creatures and Swapped rank first and second above Mother’s Day, Home, Apex, Marty, Life Is Short, Pretty Woman, And So It Goes, Safe Haven, and The Proposal in 10th place.

Remarkably Bright Creatures‘ cast is led by two-time Oscar winner Sally Field and Emmy nominee Lewis Pullman alongside Joan Chen, three-time Emmy winner Kathy Baker, Beth Grant, Sofia Black-D’Elia, and Colm Meaney, with two-time Emmy nominee Alfred Molina voicing Marcellus the octopus. The script was co-written by John Whittington (The Lego Movies, Sonic the Hedgehog).

In addition to taking the No. 1 spot on Netflix, Remarkably Bright Creatures has received rave reviews, resulting in an 81% Rotten Tomatoes score, with critics calling it warm, cozy, and deeply emotional – praising Sally Field and its charming octopus – though some found the sentimental story overly corny and predictable. It has a better audience score of 90%.

It remains to be seen how long Remarkably Bright Creatures will keep the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s chart, but some early signs are promising, considering that it dethroned the streamer’s record-shattering new movie, Swapped. With a widely accessible and heartwarming story, Remarkably Bright Creatures could comfortably sit on top for several days, if not the next week.
