WARNING: SPOILERS FOR DEVIL MAY CRY SEASON 2
After a new and improved second season made waves, Netflix has greenlit a third and final season of the epic Devil May Cry animated series, and it’s been saving the game’s best story for last. The beloved Capcom franchise primarily centers on the powerful human-demon hybrid Dante stylishly saving the world against consistent apocalyptic threats. However, much like the third game in the franchise, Devil May Cry season three can easily become a fan favorite by focusing on the emotional yet epic tension between Dante and his brother Vergil.
The Devil May Cry series showrunner, Adi Shankar, began to make a name for himself in nerd culture as the executive producer on incredibly well-received projects like the 2012 Dredd movie and epic short films like The Punisher: Dirty Laundry and a particularly gritty Power Rangers adaptation. He then went on to prove how to make an engaging and exciting animated video game adaptation with Netflix’s Castlevania series. All of which felt like mere warm-ups for Adi Shankar’s Devil May Cry.
In Spring 2025, the first season of the Devil May Cry series debuted on Netflix, introducing a less experienced Dante than previously seen. The show managed to tell a story different from the games, peppered with the over-the-top action and snappy one-liners from Dante players hoped to see in any adaptation of the beloved series. Now, Shankar has announced that season three is in development, and it aims to deliver an epic conclusion in a big way.
The Best Part Of Season Two Is Only Getting Started
Unlike the games, Shankar’s Devil May Cry series follows Dante as he discovers his origins and the depths of his abilities as a human-demon hybrid. While the show’s version of Dante lacks the endless confidence of his Capcom counterpart, the same can not be said for his brother Vergil. Season 2 of Devil May Cry fully introduced the missing older twin who is just as stubborn, direct, and cool as his character is in the games. The show’s latest season gave Vergil’s character the narrative impact he deserved and forced Dante to develop in many ways.
Netflix’s Devil May Cry gets a stylish upgrade as season 2 brings Vergil into the fold, though its attempts to switch tones is a bit too plot-heavy.
After Vergil was introduced, the games struggled to produce another antagonist as compelling as Dante’s misguided older brother. Thankfully, the Netflix show has remedied that problem by providing dynamic villains in each season that had more interesting backstories than almost any of the foes in the games. Still, it’s tough to top Vergil, who is not the strongest foe Devil May Cry‘s heroes have had to contend with, but his abilities, skill set, and demeanor are the perfect match against Dante. And judging by the post announcing season 3, the show plans to lean into that tense dynamic hard.
Season 2’s Ending Opened The Path To Dante’s Best Story
One of the series’s most clever decisions was how Netflix’s Devil May Cry has built up the franchise’s biggest villains, Mundas. The ruler of the Demon Realm was introduced as the ultimate antagonist of the first game, but the powerful foe was rather one-dimensional. The shallow character worked in the games, but the show has made him a more interesting force of nature with a backstory filled with betrayal and manipulation. His expanded backstory has helped Mundas seem even more intimidating, especially during Devil May Cry season two’s epic cliffhanger.
Who Really Killed Dante & Vergil’s Mother In Devil May Cry & Why They Did It
The death of Eva, Vergil and Dante’s mother, is one of the biggest plot points in Devil May Cry, with season 2 finally explaining why it happened.
After Dante was able to help Vergil realize that Mundas manipulated him and was behind their mother’s murder, the two brothers reached a temporary truce. However, that did not last long when a rift between the Demon World and Earth was opened. With Mundas on their tails, Vergil decided to send his brother through the portal and close it so that he could fight his mother’s killer alone. That decision opens up several exciting pathways for the series to go into in its third season, one of which could make Devil May Cry season 3 the best of the series.
What The Series Should Take From Devil May Cry’s Best Game
In season two of Devil May Cry, Vergil established that even if he and Dante were to work together, they still would not stand a chance against the current ruler of the Demon Realm. That admission makes Vergil’s decision to face the foe alone even more surprising. The story may follow expectations and have the eldest son of Sparda lose his fight and continue to be a puppet for Mundas. However, the animated series can do something far more exciting with a plot twist that would lead directly into a narrative similar to arguably the franchise’s best game.
The Best Order For Playing The Devil May Cry Games
If you’re looking to hop into the Devil May Cry series after watching the show or in preparation for the rumored DMC 6, here’s where to start.
The third entry into the Devil May Cry games acts as a prequel to the narrative established in the first and second installments. It begins with Dante gearing up to open up his own business when he is visited by a mysterious, eerie stranger with multicolored eyes. The amateur demon hunter is then attacked by hordes of foes, leading him to a demonic tower capable of linking Earth and the Demon World together, and an epic reunion with his long-lost brother Vergil.
With season two ending the way it did, season three could easily pick up where the plot of the third game began. If Vergil and the mysterious Jester, who has been revealed to be Lady’s transformed father, found a way to defeat Mundus in the Demon Realm, the characters would be in the perfect position to replicate the exciting plot of Devil May Cry 3. And the one teaser image for season 3 alludes to that being the case.
Season 3 Can Be Both A Climactic Ending And A Brilliant Beginning
The announcement of Devil May Cry‘s third and final season was posted on Netflix’s X account, and with it included a striking piece of artwork, seemingly teasing what’s ahead for Dante and Vergil. In it, both brothers are seen clashing once again, this time wearing their iconic outfits from the third game that have not yet been seen in the animated series.
Throughout seasons one and two, the Devil May Cry series has avoided following the plot of the games, but season three can be different. While the progression of the third game may not directly match the direction that the Netflix series will go, there are enough strong narrative elements in it that the series would benefit from adapting. Going all in on Vergil’s turn to the dark side and having the story crescendo with a final battle between brothers would be ideal and even leave room for a Devil May Cry anime spin-off.
Why Devil May Cry Season 2, Episode 1 Is Dedicated To James Van Der Beek
The premiere of Devil May Cry season 2 gave tribute to the late James Van Der Beek despite the actor not being part of the Netflix show’s voice cast.
Without spoiling the games, there is a lot more story that the Devil May Cry animated series can cover beyond the Force Edge Saga that promises to conclude in season three. The adventures of Nero, another snarky demon hunter who’s also voiced by the animated series voice of Dante, Johnny Yong Bosch, would make an excellent protagonist for the show’s continuation. But before the Devil May Cry adaptation can tackle its own spin-off similar to how Castlevania continued with its Nocturne series, season 3 has a lot to resolve, and hopefully that includes more fun battles and snappy one-liners.
