Netflix has doubled down on longstanding obsession with Charles Manson by releasing a new documentary about the Manson Family. The Charles Manson Tapes is the latest season of the streaming platform’s docuseries Conversations with a Killer, which has previously focused on serial murderers like Jeffrey Dahmer and David Berkowitz.

This documentary combines audio recordings of Manson himself with archive footage and, most importantly, brand-new interviews with various parties involved in the murder case that defined the United States in the 20th century more than any other. It also provides fresh insights into the motive behind the Tate-LaBianca murders, for which Manson and his followers were responsible.

Not only is this new iteration of Conversations with a Killer among the best new Netflix shows to binge right now. It’s one of the scariest TV shows about Charles Manson ever released. Those dangerously addicted to the true-crime horror and mysterious mythology surrounding the Manson Family won’t be able to take their eyes off this docuseries.

While those afflicted by the loss of people Manson and his followers killed probably don’t appreciate the continued fascination with this notorious mass murderer and cult figurehead. But it’s a story that just doesn’t seem to go away. What’s more, as far as Manson docs go, Netflix’s latest release is the best it’s ever put out.

The Charles Manson Tapes Offer Eye-Opening New Testimonies

Although Conversations with A Killer: The Charles Manson Tapes doesn’t really tell us anything new about the Tate-LaBianca murders themselves, it does offer perspectives on these crimes that we’ve never heard before, some of which place key aspects of Manson mythology in a very different light. Three interviewees in particular really set this Netflix series apart as must-watch true crime.

Dianne Lake, Catherine Share, and Stephanie Schram all joined the Manson Family as young teenagers, and were part of it at the time Sharon Tate, her houseguests, and her unborn baby were brutally stabbed to death, before the same happened to Leno and Rosemary LaBianca the following night. Their video testimonies are eye-opening to say the least.

The three women do an impressive job of conveying their experiences under Manson’s control to us, painting one of the clearest pictures of his cult that we’ve ever been given. At the same time, they provide some explosive revelations about their former leader’s crimes.

For instance, “Starting a race war and “Helter Skelter” had nothing to do with the motive for the murders,” Share tells us, dispelling one of the biggest myths around the Manson trial. Other interviewees like Stephen R. Kay, assistant prosecutor in the legendary murder case, and Haight Ashbury Free Clinic founder Dr. David Smith, fill in additional gaps in the story.

Meanwhile, prison recordings of Charles Manson in the years after 1969 appear throughout the documentary, alongside audio snippets from his fellow killers Susan Atkins and Patricia Krenwinkel, as well as archive footage of the trial, the crime scenes, and other Family members. It could be the most comprehensive video document of the Manson murders, even if it isn’t the most complete.

Conversations With A Killer Is The Best Charles Manson Doc In Netflix History

The 2025 Netflix docufilm CHAOS: The Manson Murders explores the crimes themselves in more detail, while The Six Degrees of Helter Skelter and Charles Manson: Then and Now go deeper into the Family mythology. But Conversations with a Killer is far superior to any of these releases in historical terms.

It offers much more than other documentaries such as Will You Kill For Me? Charles Manson and His Followers, too, and other Netflix releases which touch on Manson’s story, like How to Become a Cult Leader, or fictional dramas such as Manson Family Vacation and Mindhunter.

Conversations with a Killer has almost everything both the initiated and the uninitiated are looking for in a real-life Manson story. It’s the best documentary on this subject that Netflix has, which explains why it’s flying so high in the streaming charts, a week after its release.
