Questions over Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup have emerged as the two veterans approach their late 30s and 40s. However, both batters recently scored centuries in the ODI series against the West Indies, strengthening their cases to remain part of India’s plans for the tournament.
Kohli will turn 39 during the World Cup, while Rohit will be over 40. BCCI president Mithun Manhas has now shared his views on their selection prospects, stating that age should not become a barrier if players continue to perform and maintain their fitness.
Mithun Manhas backs Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s selection prospects
Manhas believes fitness and performance should remain the primary criteria for selection, while making it clear that the final decision rests with the selectors and coaching staff. He added that players who remain fit, perform consistently and help India win matches should continue to be considered, regardless of their age.
“As far as the BCCI is concerned, we are not in a position to comment because it all depends on the selectors and the coaches. But from how I look at it, fitness and performance should be the criteria for selection, and definitely not age,” he told Sportstar.
Kohli and Rohit have played important roles for India over the years, particularly in high-pressure situations, and their recent centuries against the West Indies have further highlighted their value in the ODI format.

Manhas explains how senior players can help Shubman Gill
Manhas also believes that having experienced campaigners around ODI captain Shubman Gill could benefit India’s preparations for the 2027 World Cup. He highlighted Kohli, Rohit, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah as players who can contribute to the team’s leadership structure.
“Having Virat, Hardik and Rohit in the side will definitely help him. Then there are the likes of Bumrah, who could lead, who can be the bowling captains, and then somebody who will be the fielding captain. So, it is all about the distribution of workload,” Manhas said.
He noted that these players have repeatedly delivered under pressure, making their experience valuable for Gill as he develops his leadership approach. With the World Cup scheduled to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October and November 2027, India will look to combine experienced campaigners with a well-balanced squad to challenge for the title.
