Messi buys Spanish side Eldense


Argentina legend Lionel Messi has finalised an agreement to take over Spanish second-tier outfit CD Eldense, subject to regulatory clearance, the club confirmed on Thursday.

The 39-year-old Inter Miami forward has secured a majority stake in his second Spanish club of the year, having already acquired UE Cornellà back in April.

The former Barcelona and Argentina captain struck a deal last month to purchase the entire shareholding previously held by Eldense’s majority owners, a Colombian investment group.

“Club Deportivo Eldense officially announces the acquisition of the club by Leo Messi, marking the start of a new and exciting chapter in the club’s history, which spans more than a hundred years,” read a statement published on the club’s official website.

Founded in 1921, Eldense will be eager for an immediate boost from their high-profile new owner. The club currently sit 19th in the Segunda División table and remain locked in an early-season relegation scrap, having suffered four defeats in their opening seven fixtures.
