Marvel was previously the most bankable property in all of movie making, with the Avengers films serving as the culmination of those narrative efforts, drawing in billions of dollars in the process. Since Endgame, things have felt decidedly different, and the result of a new release in the franchise is decidedly less certain than it was previously.
That said, Doomsday remains a big hope and a pretty safe bet to draw in a whole ton of money when it drops later this year. The return of Robert Downey Jr as the titular antagonist will go some way to guaranteeing that, along with the roster of potential returning characters from the older films.
Equally, the events surrounding the release of the film will play a big part in generating hype, and the first of those is about to go live across the world.
As shared by Discussing Film over on Twitter/X, the original Avengers squad will be front and center of a new event in Marvel Rivals known as Path to Doomsday: The Avengers. The unique event places an asymmetrical battle at the forefront of proceedings, as one player takes on the role of Loki in a 1v6 battle vs the Avengers.
There are two versions of the new gameplay event to get involved in, with Classic allowing players to choose from Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and Bruce Banner/Hulk, while a lone player is given the opportunity to take control of Loki. All Heroes mode allows players to choose their character from any of the much wider roster usually available in the game, though again they’ll be going up against a sole Loki.
After you’ve chosen the game mode you want to play, you can also choose your matchmaking type, either queueing up as Heroes, Loki, or in the Flexible slot (if you don’t really mind what you do). Lastly, the event also features movie screenings and photo ops on a unique Times Square map designed to replicate the first Avengers film.
The event runs until May 28, and there are plenty of rewards to get along the way, though developer NetEase hasn’t specified what those are at this juncture.
There’s no doubt that the next Avengers movie is a huge moment for the future of the franchise, and they need it to be a huge success if they’re to continue on as planned. That said, if any movie can break the current box office malaise it’s probably this one, so fingers crossed for a prosperous, superhero-filled future moving forward.
