Marvel Gives Mystery New Movie An Avengers-Level 2028 Release Date, Returns To 4 Movies A Year (For Now)

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has added a new mystery movie to its schedule, breaking a 4-year trend. 2024 was a lean year for the franchise. Even though it saw the release of one of the MCU’s best movies, Deadpool & Wolverine, there was only one Marvel film in theaters. Marvel’s 2025 movies are Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, with the three releases bringing the franchise to a regular theatrical output. With the MCU’s next couple of years presenting a leaner schedule again, 2028 is going to be packed to make up for it.

Disney has announced that an Untitled MCU movie will be released on December 15, 2028. That would make 2028 the first year with four MCU movies since 2021, which saw the releases of Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals, and Spider-Man: No Way Home. Besides its new December date, which copies the release schedule for the MCU’s biggest upcoming movies, Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars, Marvel has the following dates for untitled MCU movies in 2028: February 18, May 5, and November 10.

What Marvel Studios’ New Mystery 2028 Movie Means

The MCU Is Giving The Film An Avengers-Level Release

Recently, Marvel Studios delayed Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The pair of Avengers films were initially going to be released on May 1, 2026, and May 7, 2027, respectively. Now, both of them will be going for the holiday window, with Avengers: Doomsday arriving in theaters on December 18, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars set to end the Multiverse Saga on December 17, 2027. Interestingly, the MCU’s new mystery December 15, 2028, date follows the pattern of the upcoming Avengers movies, which could mean a couple of things.

10 Marvel Movies That Could Fill The MCU’s 2028 Release Dates After The Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars Delays

The MCU has three release dates for secret movies in 2028, and after Avengers: Doomsday & Secret Wars were delayed, those could go to major heroes.

One train of thought is that Marvel could be dating the first Avengers movie in the MCU saga that comes after the Multiverse Saga, given how the lack of an Avengers film since 2019 negatively impacted the franchise. The date could also be reserved for a major character or team, with prospects including Thor 5, which Chris Hemsworth has said he is game to do, Doctor Strange 3, and more. Additionally, if the MCU’s next saga is as focused on the X-Men as it is expected to be, giving the team’s debut film an Avengers-level date would make sense.

2028 Is Shaping Up To Be A Massive Year For The MCU

While we know that the MCU’s release schedule is always subject to change, which means 2028 might not have four Marvel movies when all is said and done, the prospect is exciting. The MCU has grown to a level where there are so many characters that I believe three movies or fewer per year leaves a lot of players absent from the franchise for too long.

Since Marvel has had to combat complaints about too much content in recent years and MCU projects feeling like homework, with Disney+ heavily influencing it, putting the MCU’s biggest characters in films seems like a great alternative. With an Avengers-level date, the MCU‘s new mystery 2028 movie can do just that.
