Marshals Marks Its First Big Death & Changes The Course Of The Yellowstone Sequel Forever

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Marshals season 1, episode 11, “On Thin Ice.”Marshals experiences its first big character death that alters the future of the hit series. Luke Grimes’ Yellowstone sequel may have debuted towards the end of the 2025-2026 TV cycle, but that didn’t deter it from making a big splash. Despite its late start, Marshals has already given Tracker a run for its money when it comes to ratings, and with season 2 on the way, expect that a healthy competition between the CBS procedurals will continue next season.

The death of Monica functioned as the launching pad for the story of Marshals. Without it, Kayce wouldn’t have gone on a different path other than living a quiet life at East Camp with her and Tate. His loss was integral to launching this new era of Yellowstone. However, Monica’s demise happened long before the events of Marshals and its impact on the show has already been felt. The major character’s demise in “On Thin Ice,” however, will still have a significant effect on the future of the show.

Garrett’s Death Effectively Reinforces Kayce & Cal’s Bond In Marshals

After a particularly harrowing time in the woods, Cal and Kayce return home to the tragic news that Garrett passed away while they were away. Apparently, his injuries from the fire were far too severe for him to overcome, resulting in his death. Andrea is distraught, especially since they just started dating, but the biggest impact of this loss will undoubtedly be on Kayce and Cal, as this means that there are only two Musketeers left.

Marshals Officially Leaves Yellowstone In The Past

A little more than a month since it premiered on CBS, Luke Grimes’ Marshals officially leaves Yellowstone in the past and moves forward.

The death of Garrett comes at a point when Kayce and Cal’s relationship is arguably at its most precarious. Their time in the woods revealed many secrets about their past. Kayce found out the truth about the death of Roner, while Cal was made aware of the Duttons’ shady dealings in Montana. Losing Garrett is an effective way for Marshals to repair the relationship between the surviving Musketeers, as the tragedy is a good motivation for them to be loyal to each other despite the pent-up and new grudges.

What Kayce & Cal’s Loyalty To Each Other Means For Marshals’ Future

The concept of loyalty was a big part of Yellowstone‘s story. Kevin Costner’s John Dutton III required everyone in his orbit to have unequivocal loyalty to him, and those who defied his orders were punished accordingly, even Kayce when he tried getting away from the family legacy. In Marshals, the idea takes a different shape, as it shifts its focus to the show’s central team, but its core relationship is between Kayce and Cal.

More than Kayce learning the truth about Roner, Cal finding the truth about the Dutton family in Montana is more integral to the future of Marshals. Now, John III’s youngest son has a clear backer — assuming that the show will not drive another wedge between them. This makes it easier for Kayce to manage the less than ideal legacy that his family has in the area, as he no longer has to rely on himself to deflect them moving forward in Marshals.
