Manchester United have turned their attention to signing Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha after missing out on Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Red Devils were determined to strike an agreement with the Hammers over Fernandes, but they could not persuade them to lower their demands.

Spurs eventually met the reported £85 million price tag. The north London giants agreed to pay the entire fee as a guaranteed package which United did not commit.

United were also unwilling to meet Fernandes’ wage demands, and they are now expected to focus on alternative options in the transfer market.

According to The Athletic, the club have made enquiries about Dortmund’s Nmecha and could step up their interest in signing the German soon.

Dortmund also value him in the region of £85 million this summer, but United may have a different stance on him, given his experience.

While Mateus remains relatively inexperienced at just 21, Nmecha has established himself as one of Bundesliga’s best at the age of 25.
