Furthermore, Newcastle are set to play hardball in negotiations with their valuation. They are said to demand around £100m for his services.
Neither the player nor the club is likely to change their stance, which means United look unlikely to pursue a deal for the former AC Milan man.
He could still depart the Magpies with Arsenal and Manchester City keen. The latter have just made contact with the Tyneside outfit.
