Liverpool sign Brughmans as Elliott leaves for Valencia on loan

Lucca Brughmans has put pen to paper on a six-year contract with Liverpool after his move from Genk was officially completed on deadline day.

Brughmans has joined Andoni Iraola’s side for a reported £30m (€34.9m) fee, and will link up with the Reds next season and spend the 2026-27 campaign on loan at Genk.

The 18-year-old made his debut in the Belgian Pro League in January 2025 and has gone on to make 30 league appearances, keeping six clean sheets in the process.

His arrival at Anfield is with a view to improving Liverpool’s goalkeepers at the club, with Alisson Becker’s contract expiring at the end of next season.

Freddie Woodman, Vitezslav Jaros and Giorgi Mamardashvili are Liverpool’s other options, though the latter was linked with a move to Nottingham Forest this summer.

Brughmans has played in all four of Genk’s league matches so far this season, keeping one clean sheet to help his team sit seventh in the early-season standings.

Brughmans is the fifth new signing at Liverpool this season, but one player who is on his way out of Anfield is Harvey Elliott, who has secured a season-long loan at Valencia.

After falling out of favour under Arne Slot during Liverpool’s Premier League title-winning season in 2024-25, Elliott joined Aston Villa on loan last term.

However, the 23-year-old failed to establish himself in Unai Emery’s team, making just nine appearances, with three of those being starts, totalling just 277 minutes in total.

Elliott managed just one goal during his time at Villa Park, and he will now be hoping to revive his career in LaLiga with Valencia, who are winless in their first three matches.

“I wanted the opportunity to come here, play regularly and experience a different league,” said Elliott.

“I’m very grateful to Valencia for giving me that opportunity. I feel ready to get started, but ultimately, it’s down to the coach whether he wants to put me in.”
