Liverpool defender Jeremie Frimpong has been left out of the Netherlands squad for the 2026 World Cup.
Coach Ronald Koeman named his 26-man squad for the tournament on Wednesday, with Frimpong among the omissions.
The right-back has won 15 caps for his country but will not feature in North America after a disappointing first season with Liverpool.
Frimpong joined Liverpool for £29.5million and made 35 appearances but struggled to make the kind of impact that convinced them to lure him from Bayer Leverkusen. He scored two goals and provided just one assist.
Having struggled to keep his place in the Liverpool side late in the season, Frimpong will have to watch his compatriots from home, with Jurrien Timber and Denzel Dumfries getting the nod as the right-back options. Brighton and Hove Albion’s Mats Wieffer can also operate in that role as well as in midfield.
Inter Milan centre-back Stefan de Vrij misses out on what will likely be the 34-year-old’s final opportunity to play for the Oranje at a World Cup, but Atalanta midfielder Marten de Roon is in the squad, having last played for his country in March 2024.
Guus Til is another handed an unexpected return. Til last played for Netherlands in the Nations League in 2024, but is rewarded after scoring 17 goals for Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven.
Bournemouth winger Justin Kluivert is in the squad after shaking off injury in time to return ahead of the tournament.
Koeman’s men will face Japan in their opening fixture on June 14, having been drawn in a tricky Group F in which they will also take on Sweden and Tunisia.
They will warm up for the tournament with games against Algeria on June 3 and Uzbekistan on June 8.
